Dean's Application To Be A Knight Would Not Be Accepted.

HERE IS AN AMAZING MERLIN/ARTHUR FANVID FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT. (Not by me, obviously. I wish I could have come up with this.)

Has anyone written a Supernatural/Merlin crossover comparing the two pairs who are ridiculously willing to sacrifice their lives for each other? Arthur and Merlin do, in some ways, feel like a no less secretive but far more healthy Sam and Dean. I would be very interested in seeing how they would react to each other when Sam and Dean, er, inexplicably turn up at Camelot. Perhaps they are investigating sinister stone angels and get sent back in time. Uther would probably try to have Sam burnt at the stake.

A few specific thoughts on Merlin (spoilers up to 'The Labyrinth of Gedref'):

On 'The Gates of Avalon': Prince Arthur, when being dragged out of a lake, looks terrifyingly like David Tennant. Seriously, take a look at these screencaps. Merlin goes diving for the future king and emerges with the Doctor. It is more than a little disturbing.

On 'The Labyrinth of Gedref': that was the most homoerotic rat-eating scene I have ever watched. Not that it has much competition, but I was impressed.

On Merlin in general: I am slightly disturbed by Merlin's utter lack of remorse when killing people. I mean, yes, all right, he only kills people to defend himself or others, but I still find it somewhat alarming. He is such a lovely boy most of the time! He wants to help everyone! And then, er, the people he helps poison him or grow up to kill his boyfriend.

ANYWAY.

Actually, that is a rather odd recurring theme in Merlin. When Merlin helps people, it creates problems; when he kills people, it solves them. There's certainly nothing wrong with not having a conventional moral message, but it did confuse me a bit. This is largely, I suspect, because I do tend to expect a certain morality from a family show, and so I subconsciously file aspects into the 'this must be the moral message' box as I watch and then become bewildered when I rummage through the box later and come out with 'DON'T HELP PEOPLE; KILL THEM'.

Of course, besides musing on television morality, I have been considering the far more pressing question of what Hogwarts Houses the characters of Merlin would be sorted into. Arthur and Merlin are both pure Gryffindor. Gwen is a Hufflepuff. Morgana I'm not sure about; perhaps she would be a Ravenclaw? Gaius would be a Ravenclaw, I think, although [livejournal.com profile] reipan suggests Hufflepuff, and Uther, were he actually willing to go to the castle and put on the Sorting Hat, would be a Slytherin. (I very much enjoy the idea of Uther receiving an acceptance letter from Hogwarts. He would be furious.)

IMPORTANT QUESTION: does anyone know much about attitudes to homosexuality in the Dark Ages? Were Merlin and Arthur to be discovered to be in a sexual relationship, would there be shock, and if so would it be based more on the fact that they are both male or on the fact that Merlin is so far Arthur's social inferior?

(...yes, I may possibly be considering fanfiction. Possibly.)

Merlin's lack of angsting over killing people occurred to me in several episodes, but then I dismissed it because I found it quite refreshing to watch a programme where the ANGST over killing people didn't bludgeon me over the head every five minutes. I am aware that this says some dubious things about my moral character. Er. Oops?

I WANT TO SEE UTHER'S REACTION TO GETTING A HOGWARTS LETTER. IN FACT, I WANT TO SEE HIS REACTION TO DERREN AFTER ONLY HAVING RECENTLY RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HOGWARTS. ("You're not from That Place, are you? Because if you are, BEGONE FROM MY COURT BEFORE YOUR HEAD LEAVES WITHOUT YOU. P.S. I like executions!")

Oooh, random Havemercy fan. *waves*

sjhdaksjdbkj HELLO

Do you also find that when you try to talk to people about Havemercy, it quite quickly dissolves into you just making tiny whale-like noises and flailing your hands around? Because although I feel this accurately conveys the strength of my feelings, it does not so much help people know while they should be reading it. Riona discovered this while I was staying with her.

OKAY, DIFFICULT QUESTION: Royston, Hal, Thom or Rook?

(this comment came at just the right time: apparently all I want to do right now is talk to people about this book)

[identity profile] hold-onhope.livejournal.com 2009-04-17 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. I keep trying to describe it to people but all I can get out is AMAZING. FREAKING AMAZING. IT'S ABOUT MAGIC. AND DRAGONS, BUT NOT REALLY. FHJKAFJAL. READ IT.

The usual reaction is for them to look at me sideways and probably whisper that I'm crazy behind my back.

UGH, THAT QUESTION, WHY. Okay, If I had to choose - Hal. But only because of the books.

Oh, bugger, now all I can think of is why I should choose one of the others instead.

You?

I KNOW, IT IS THE QUESTION NO-ONE WANTS TO ANSWER. I choose Royston, because whenever I try to formulate any kind of actual response to this question, and I run through all the choices, he is the one I feel the most guilty about not choosing, and also because I REALLY FREAKING LOVE HIM. I don't even know, I can't properly express my love for him without massively spoilering Riona - who has yet to read this book, jhfkjhak - but if I could go into detail here, I would do. Also I love Hal, because I think Jaida summed it up well by saying 'Hal is a delicate flower', and I love Thom, because n'awww, Thom, and also Rook, because he is just so plain unlikable, and I kept waiting for his redeeming characteristics to kick in and then there just not being any, ever, but just the whisper of a promise that there might be.

JKASBCKAJBKB POSSIBLY WE SHOULD HAVE THIS CONVERSATION IN A PLACE WHERE SPOILERS ARE OKAY.

Also, would it be all right for me to friend you? Havemercy = friends, apparently, and your Lupin > Jacob Black icon made me laugh. :DDD

[identity profile] hold-onhope.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, yes. I just love them all, and I mean, I knew I would before I even read the book, but this is just ridiculous. How can I love Rook? How is it even possible, he's so, so... yeah, no spoilers here. I have a feeling that Riona is ignoring us if she has any intention of reading the book, spoiler-phobe that she is, but still.

Oh, and yes to the friending, I was going to suggest it anyway! I see you're a BSG fan as well, which makes me happy. And I kind of assumed, what with the Jaida Jones thing and all, that you're a Shoebox fan, but your mood theme FILLS ME WITH GLEE because I'm currently re-reading.

So, yes. Friends. And then we can talk spoilery. Because I've had nobody to talk to about it and suddenly I NEED to. ;D
