rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (hope is all we have)
Well, I really have finished The World Ends With You now. I'm by no means a completionist; I'll generally play a game until I've completed the storyline and then stop playing. With The World Ends With You, though, I finished the main storyline in five days and just kept playing for another week and a half; I was determined to get every last scrap of story out of that little cartridge. I was fascinated. But now I've collected all the secret reports and fought through the boss rush and seen the secret ending and, alas, I think I've uncovered all the story there is to find, unless I want to buy loads of items and see the story of how Neku Sakuraba became the best friend of all the shopkeepers in Shibuya.

In a previous entry, I referred to the ridiculous 'Another Day' chapter as 'non-canonical'. I was highly amused when the secret reports made it clear that not only is 'Another Day' in fact a canonical parallel universe but it actually ties into the main storyline. I love this game so much I could marry it.

(I sort of want to see what would happen if The World Ends With You Neku met 'Another Day' Neku, now.)

Something else that amused me:

Riona: Where can I find a Joshua fusion sticker? It could be sold in any one of these shops! How am I supposed to—
Riona: ...
Riona: It's in the super-expensive watch shop for posh people, isn't it?

And, lo and behold...

The World Ends With You is, in conclusion, a gem of a game. I love the concept and the aesthetic and the characters. I particularly like the way my perception of Joshua progressed over the course of my time with him from 'annoying and possibly evil little snot who needs to go away' to 'annoying and possibly evil and yet wonderful little snot who endlessly fascinates me'. I want to write so much about him. I just don't know where to start.

I should probably mention, in case anyone is curious about this game but, alas, has spent all their money on Apple products and doesn't have any left over for a DS: a remastered version called The World Ends With You Solo Remix is also available for iPad (2 onwards) or iPhone (4 onwards), but you'll want to make sure you're getting the right version, because the iPad version won't work on an iPhone and vice versa.

I don't work for Square's marketing department, I swear. I just want everyone to play this game and then talk about it with me. I'm not ready to leave the Shibuya underground yet!
