Finally picked up and finished my replay of NEO: The World Ends with You from a couple of years ago!

Notes on NEO: The World Ends with You. )

On a replay, I think my overall feelings on this game remain much the same. It tries to be a new story and a direct sequel simultaneously, with the result that it doesn't quite succeed in being either of those things; the returning characters ultimately just overshadow the new characters, and the two story threads distract from each other until they both end up feeling incomplete.

That said, I had a great time playing it! It's a very fun, playful, stylish game. I love how lively and entertaining the dialogue is, and Fret is a delight.

I'd love to see another World Ends with You game at some point. There's nothing else quite like this series.
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
I posted a meme over on Tumblr, which I’m going to reproduce here:

Give me any two (or more) characters I’m familiar with, and I’ll tell you how they would cope in an ‘oh no, there’s only one bed’ scenario!

I got a good number of requests on Tumblr, and I had a blast with all of them. There’s a surprising amount of scope for variation in an ‘only one bed’ situation, and it’s interesting to think about how different character combinations would react to it! My responses exist on a spectrum from ‘general thoughts’ to ‘tiny ficlet’.

The 2018 PS4 game Marvel's Spider-Man is one of my favourite videogames of all time, and I was delighted to receive the sequel Spider-Man 2 for Christmas!

I've just finished the Coney Island mission. Here are some early thoughts.

Thoughts on Spider-Man 2 for PS5. )

There's a love for New York that comes through so intensely in Insomniac's Spider-Man games. It reminds me a little of the World Ends with You games, which are clearly brimming with love for Shibuya.

You can get a strong sense of place in other mediums as well, of course - Rivers of London comes to mind - but I'm fascinated by the way a game can let you immerse yourself in a location and explore it at your own pace. In his early teens, my brother learnt a lot about how to find his way around the real-life London by playing the PS2 game The Getaway.

I don't think I'll be able to navigate New York after playing the Spider-Man games, unless I happen to show up there with spider powers. I suspect that walking the streets of New York and swinging over the rooftops are slightly different experiences.

A few times over the years, I've tried to pin down my ten favourite fictional characters and have quickly given it up as an impossible exercise. I love so many characters! How can I possibly narrow it down?

At long last, though, I've actually managed to put a list together! The key was imposing a rule on myself: characters only qualify if I've loved them for at least ten years, so I can be sure that this is a long-lasting affection and I haven't just been blinded by something new and shiny. Sorry, Jack Shephard; you might have been a contender if I'd watched Lost when it first came out.

Fun fact: only one character on the final list has never intentionally killed anyone, and half the characters on the list are outright murderers, which I'm going to define as 'have intentionally killed someone who posed no immediate danger to them'. (Possibly more than half. There's one weird borderline case.)

I'm going to post a little writeup for each of the characters on my 'favourite characters' list, probably in three parts: one post with four characters, two posts with three. Here's the first set!

I'm not posting these in order of preference (I could not possibly pin down an order of preference); the four characters in this post are just the four whose writeups I finished first, and I've listed them in alphabetical order within the post itself.

Elena Fisher, Uncharted

Who is this character and why do you love them? It's strange to think back on it now that Nate and Sully have won me over, but, back when I played the first Uncharted game, I wasn't really a fan of any of the characters. I liked Elena a reasonable amount; I disliked Sully; I was uninterested in Nate. But then Elena kicked her kidnapper out of a helicopter, and I went from 'I like you okay' to 'I think you're wonderful'. And, having won my heart, she made me like everyone else through her interactions with them. She's bold, she's adventurous, she's playful, she refuses to take any shit, and she elevates any other character she's around. She reminds me a little of my sister-in-law, actually.
Do you ship this character with anyone? Elena/Nate is one of my absolute favourite pairings of all time. When I try to think of pairings I ship, my mind will usually go to them first. They play so well off each other, they have fun with each other, and I love how much Nate admires her. I really like that the games allow Nate to show vulnerability around Elena, too.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Familiar and Strange. I enjoyed Uncharted 4, but I was hoping it'd focus more on the established characters rather than newcomer Sam. This fic envisions how Uncharted 4 might have played out if Elena had been more involved from the start.
Are there any similar characters you love? Teresa Lisbon of The Mentalist is very like Elena, I think. I was actually half-debating whether to put Lisbon or Elena on this list, but another character from The Mentalist was on the list already, and I thought it made sense to keep it to one character per canon. (Yes, I'm talking about Patrick Jane. I don't know why I'm trying to play coy. Of course I'm talking about Patrick Jane.)
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? Elena poking fun at you while you play Crash Bandicoot is my favourite moment in the entire Uncharted series, and I think Naughty Dog should come out with a full-length Elena Fisher Mocks Your Videogame Skills Simulator. I can tell you right now that it would be the best game ever made.

Joshua Kiryu, The World Ends with You

Who is this character and why do you love them? Joshua Kiryu is an obnoxious little shit who causes problems on purpose. When I first met him, I hated him; I just wanted Shiki back! But Joshua was just so unapologetically and gleefully awful that somehow he ended up winning me over. He's so much fun!
Do you ship this character with anyone? I'm a big fan of Neku/Joshua in which Joshua spends the entire time driving Neku up the wall. Neku's feelings for Joshua are so complicated and interesting.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Select Player Two, in which Joshua drags Neku into another round of the Reapers' Game. It is a blast to write Joshua being as annoying as possible at all times.
Are there any similar characters you love? Like Joshua, Beatrice of Umineko: When They Cry gleefully launches herself into ensuring everyone has a terrible time. There's also Nagito Komaeda of Danganronpa 2; Komaeda isn't quite as intentionally awful as Joshua, but he definitely inspires similar 'holy shit, why are you like this and why do I have to put up with you?' feelings in the people around him.
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? My current laptop is named Joshua, after Joshua Kiryu, because it's tiny and silver and pissed me off the moment I met it. It made me jump through so many hoops if I wanted to save files onto the hard drive by default instead of onto the cloud!

Squall Leonhart, Final Fantasy VIII

Who is this character and why do you love them? Squall Leonhart was the first character I ever really connected with. As a deeply socially awkward thirteen-year-old, I was shocked to discover this character whose inner thoughts were just like mine; he didn't want to hurt other people, but he didn't know how to talk to them. I felt that this game understood me, and I wasn't used to feeling understood.
Do you ship this character with anyone? Squall/Zell was the first pairing I ever wrote fanfiction for, at the age of thirteen, and I'm fond of it to this day. There are echoes of Squall/Zell in Ryuji/Joker, Yu/Yosuke and Prompto/Noctis, all of which I ship enormously. Apparently I have a weakness for pairing the quiet protagonist up with his energetic, loyal, compassionate friend who very openly admires him.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? With These Signs Upon Our Souls, a Final Fantasy VIII/Final Fantasy XIII crossover, in which the characters of Final Fantasy VIII become l'Cie. It's the longest continuous story I've ever written, and I'm proud of myself for finishing it. (It's 26,000 words, which I know isn't actually that long in the grand scheme of things, but it's long for me!)
Are there any similar characters you love? Other characters who are socially inept in a way I find relatable include Noctis Lucis Caelum of Final Fantasy XV and Mark Corrigan of Peep Show. I also love Lightning of Final Fantasy XIII; I find her brand of social ineptitude less personally relatable, but I do think she's generally very similar to Squall.
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? If you were planning to erase my memories of every fictional character I'd ever loved and you were only letting me keep one, that would be a weird thing to do, but I'd keep Squall. I don't think I'd consider him my favourite character of all time, but he's definitely the character who's most important to me.

Light Yagami, Death Note

Who is this character and why do you love them? Light is a terrible kid who discovered an untraceable murder method and decided to kill off all the criminals to make the world worship him, and somehow I find everything about him enchanting. I love watching him come up with convoluted plots that screw over everyone around him, himself occasionally included. I love watching him firmly convince himself that he's totally, totally justified in the terrible things he does. I love that his ego will never let him resist a challenge or an opportunity to rub his victory in someone's face. I love the tiny hints of warmth that we occasionally catch glimpses of - his love for his family, his fondness for Ryuk - and I love that, even if that softer side exists, it's not enough to stop him from going too far; he's absolutely prepared to bury it if he has to.
Do you ship this character with anyone? I ship Light Yagami with himself, hard, in every possible variant. Light interacting with another version of himself in dreams or visions? Perfect. Light encountering an actual duplicate of himself, and the two of him attempting to seduce and murder each other, because they can't both be gods of the new world but they can't just write 'Light Yagami' in the Death Note? Magnificent. Light just masturbating while thinking about how great he is? Beautiful. I apologise for posting yet another entry about Light Yagami masturbating.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Shackles, in which Light and L are toxic soulmates. 'They're both in love with each other, but they will not hesitate to destroy each other' turned out to be a fun dynamic to work with! I'm pleasantly surprised by how enthusiastically this fic was received, too; the Death Note fandom is remarkably active, considering that the canon ended over a decade ago.
Are there any similar characters you love? It's actually hard to think of anyone like Light. Light's not the sort of character you usually see committing atrocities. He's not an outcast, he hasn't had a hard life; he's a golden boy. He's smart, he's polite, he's popular; he's used to being praised and admired. He works hard, but he knows he'd still beat everyone without really trying. And, because he's gone through life without ever truly being challenged, he assumes he can murder thousands of people and get away with it. (EDIT: Wait, Akechi! Goro Akechi from Persona 5, particularly the expanded Royal edition, is very Light in both appearance and personality.)
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? It can be tricky to talk about liking Light Yagami, because some parts of the fandom can interpret 'Light is my favourite character' as 'I think Light was right'. No! Light was wrong! Everything he does is terrible! That's why I love him so much! I keep getting his musical song 'Where Is the Justice?' stuck in my head, because it's a banger, but it doesn't feel great when I catch myself singing 'where is the justice when the guilty all go free? why don't we lock them up and throw away the key?'

More notes from my NEO: The World Ends with You replay! I’ve just finished week two. Once again, I spend most of this entry talking about vanishingly minor characters.

Notes on NEO: The World Ends with You. )

NEO: The World Ends with You is a flawed game in some ways, but the love and passion and playfulness that went into it shine through. It may be a clumsily written love letter, but there's no question that the love is real. A mess, but a beautiful mess, and so many of the games I enjoy are beautiful messes.
rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)
The goal of NEO: The World Ends with You is to survive and escape the deadly game you're trapped in. The goal is not to make friends with the in-game shopkeepers. But tell that to my playstyle.

My replay is partway through week two, but there's not really anything spoilery in this entry, largely because I've become fixated on this one shopkeeper and half my notes are about him. I don't understand how this happened.

Notes on NEO: The World Ends with You. )

I always feel slightly bad when Fret goes 'man, I'm starving!' at the café and then I just force-feed everyone six cups of coffee. NO FOOD. ONLY COFFEE. You'll thank me when you see your defence stat.

Persona 5 gave me an itch to play more stylish games about teenagers hanging out in Shibuya, so I'm replaying NEO: The World Ends with You. Here are my notes! I'm up to the end of week one, but this entry vaguely alludes to later events.

Notes on NEO: The World Ends with You. )

On this playthrough, I've made it my mission to befriend Yudai Miki, the Hog Fang shopkeeper on Centre Street. He greets me with 'O-oh, yo' whenever I enter the shop, and somehow I find it very endearing. I bought a hat I didn't need from him in the hope of making him like me.

(I added 'on this playthrough' to that paragraph because I was slightly worried people scrolling past this entry might think I'm forcibly attempting to befriend an actual real-life shopkeeper.)

Finished NEO: The World Ends with You! Here are my notes up to the end.

Spoilers up to the end of NEO: The World Ends with You. )

Final verdict: this game was sort of a mess, but an enjoyable mess! Which is what I tend to expect from Square in general and Nomura in particular, really. I'm satisfied.

More NEO: The World Ends with You! I've just finished week two.

I've just noticed that, in the pre-battle splash screen, Rindo is holding his phone in his hand as he charges at the enemy, making this perhaps the most realistic contemporary RPG ever designed. (I suppose the fact that he's wearing a mask pulled down over his chin is also extremely contemporary.)

NEO: The World Ends with You, up to the end of week two. )

I think this game's strongest quality is how funny it is. The dialogue is constantly lively, constantly entertaining. I'm having a lot of fun.
rionaleonhart: okami: amaterasu is startled. (NOT SO FAST)
Still hugely enjoying NEO: The World Ends with You, an incomprehensible and delightful love letter to Shibuya.

Food's expensive now that you have to order for everyone in the team, but the thought of everyone eating together is cute, so I'll allow it.

My head goes 'feed everyone the most efficient stat-boosting foods', but my heart goes 'give everyone food they'll like', and my heart is stronger.

More on NEO: The World Ends with You, up to day one of week two. )

This game does away with the bravery requirement for clothes, meaning that the boys in the party are absolutely happy to wear dresses straight out of the gate. It's a shame you can't actually see the clothes they're wearing, because I bet Fret is rocking the miniskirt I've equipped him with.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
I'm currently playing two recent, new-to-me Square games simultaneously: Bravely Default II and NEO: The World Ends with You. I am up to my neck in Square Enix nonsense and having a great time.

Today, I'm talking about NEO: The World Ends with You! I'm up to... day five? I think I'm on day five.

Early thoughts on NEO: The World Ends with You. )

Like the original, this game is both strangely compelling and absolute bullshit. I'm very pleased.
rionaleonhart: twewy: joshua kiryu is being fabulously obnoxious and he knows it. (is that so?)
I've now seen the first six episodes of the World Ends with You anime! It's not a bad adaptation, but it does feel very videogamey. This is because it's adapted from a videogame, of course, but seeing the characters completing obvious videogame missions does sometimes leave me wondering why I'm watching this, rather than playing it. It's a great story, but it's very much a story that works best in the original medium.

I also feel the anime waters down the characterisation slightly. Joshua, in particular, is not enough of an unbearable little shit. If I don't want to strangle him within sixty seconds of meeting him, he's not Joshua.

Also, Joshua is too tall! I always envisioned him as noticeably shorter than Neku; it's very weird to see them around the same height. Joshua's supposed to be tiny and frail!

I think Joshua may actually be taller than Neku in the anime, which is obviously illegal. In the game, Neku thinks 'this pipsqueak is my new partner?' when they first meet!

All that said, the anime does have some nice little additions, particularly with regard to Eri. And it's cool to see the characters in motion! I love how closely the art style matches the game. (The World Ends with You has a very distinctive graffiti-inspired visual style: bold designs, thick black lines.)

Plus there's some weird, sinister homoeroticism between Neku and Joshua, and that's very important.

More notes on Persona Q! I've just finished the Evil Spirit Club labyrinth. (The Evil Spirit Club is much more unsettling than I expected of a non-horror game on the 3DS and I do not like it at all. I slowed down on playing Persona Q for a while because it was entirely too scary.)

I'm glad this game gave me the opportunity to say that Yosuke is one-third handsomeness, but also why is it letting me flirt with Yosuke if it won't let me follow through?

('Whoa... C-c'mon, you're embarrassing me!' Yosuke responded, blushing.)

Holy shit, Tentarafoo is a lifesaver. I never realised how useful it was before. I've started using it at the beginning of every battle.

heck yeah, gonna hide from a cursed doll in a bathroom stall with my boyfriend

(and also Mitsuru and Ken I GUESS)

'Sorry, I was daydreaming, so I'm not sure what you asked me.' I'm glad Persona 3 protagonist Kosuke is living up to my 'clueless weirdo' headcanon characterisation now that he actually has dialogue.

It's lovely to see Kanji clumsily offering Ken advice and support!

'I'll show you what a man I am,' Kanji mumbles in his sleep. I love Kanji.

Elizabeth left me a secret message, and Yosuke was really unreasonably excited by the prospect that she might be confessing her love to me, just absolutely thrilled, and I felt pretty bad about having to tell him that the note said 'the price tag is still on your clothes'. It's okay, Yosuke; you don't have to settle for vicariously being with me.

I'm glad Persona Q has reminded me of how much I love Yosuke Hanamura (it's a lot), but now I'm torn between 'I should write more fanfiction about Yosuke!' and 'I don't have any inspiration'. I checked my list of unwritten fic ideas to see whether it had anything to offer, but the only Persona 4 concepts listed are unhelpfully vague:

- something about Persona 4 inspired by Higurashi (small towns!) or maybe Silent Hill (fog!)? Either of these would probably be a good opportunity to psychologically destroy Yosuke. (Or anyone else, but, let's be honest, it's going to be Yosuke.)
- Persona 4/FFXV: can you make Yosuke and Prompto meet? (Should you?)

Come to think of it, the Evil Spirit Club labyrinth makes a Silent Hill-esque Persona fic strangely plausible.

Yosuke meeting Prompto does sound potentially delightful, but I'm a little afraid that, if I attempted to write it, they'd end up sounding exactly the same and I'd be exposed as a fraud who can't differentiate characters.

Maybe at some point I should try to write a hundred words of every concept on my 'unwritten fic ideas' list and see whether any of them get a foothold. (Although I'm not sure about some of these ideas. 'Community/Utena. Jeff at Ohtori Academy. Meets Akio, goes "wow, so much better than the dean", gets banged.')

I think Persona 4 might be my favourite Persona game, which is impressive, because I played Persona 5 and went 'holy crap, I love this game, this is incredible. I suppose I'll check out Persona 4, but there's no way it won't be a disappointment after this.' And then I loved Persona 4, if possible, even more.

The Persona series isn't perfect by any means, but it's brought me so much joy during a worldwide joy shortage. Easily my best discovery of 2020.

Can't believe I went an entire day without posting about 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. It's getting increasingly difficult to specify where I'm up to, but here's some talk about Miura, Megumi, Hijiyama and Ogata's routes.

Notes on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

It's pretty cool to see the way the developments in these out-of-order scenes slowly start to link up!
rionaleonhart: twewy: joshua kiryu is being fabulously obnoxious and he knows it. (is that so?)
My laptop was on its last legs, so, alas, I've had to replace it. My new laptop is tiny and silver and pissed me off in numerous different ways the moment we met, so I've named it Joshua after the unbearable Joshua Kiryu of The World Ends with You.

This naming was actually a great decision. I love Joshua Kiryu, even though he's the worst, so my laptop now inspires a sort of fondness when it displays the obnoxiousness of its namesake, rather than just rage.

Speaking of The World Ends with You: a sequel's been announced! I'm so excited! It's been thirteen years since the original; I'd given up hope! The original is still one of my all-time favourite games; it's fun, it's stylish and it's got some fascinating character dynamics. I'm looking forward to returning to Shibuya.

In my search for something to follow up Persona 5, I wandered into replaying the first Danganronpa game. It's interesting to revisit it!

I've just finished replaying the second case; there are spoilers up to that point below the cut.

Danganronpa: spoilers up to the end of the second case. )

It's sort of hilarious that, in the original Danganronpa, you're not playing the detective character. The detective character's already worked everything out, but she can't be bothered to spell it out for everyone, so that task falls to you. Poor Naegi.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
Rei: I got an email from Netflix today about a new show. 'When everyone else mysteriously vanishes from their wealthy town, the teen residents of West Ham must forge their own society to survive.' Sounds like it might be your jam.
Riona: I was about to say 'if it's not High School Musical: The Musical, I'm not interested,' but actually that does potentially sound my jam.

I've now watched the first series of The Society! The concept's interesting: a bunch of teenagers are stranded in an empty town. Instead of going full-on Lord of the Flies, they try to construct a functional society and then have to try to prevent it from falling apart (how do you decide who makes the decisions? how do you make sure you don't run out of food? how do you deal with crime?). I'm not especially invested in any of the characters, though, so I doubt I'll be writing fanfiction (although I've said 'I'm not going to write fanfiction' about many things in the past and I've almost invariably been wrong).

Out of curiosity, I checked AO3 a few episodes in, to see which characters and pairings were popular, and I was surprised to see that the most-written character was Grizz, the guy with terrible hair who up to that point had contributed nothing but pretentious quoting. He does have some better moments in the latest episodes, though.

Spoilers for the first series of The Society. )

I haven't done a meme here in a very long time, but for some reason I feel like digging this one up.

Ask any fictional character you think I might be able to manage a question, and I'll reply in-character as them with an answer (or possibly reply as myself going 'WHAT THE HELL, I CAN'T DO THIS'). Feel free to ask either as yourself or as another character.

You may, if you wish, ask multiple questions (and/or multiple characters) or attempt to engage the characters in extended conversation.
rionaleonhart: okami: amaterasu is startled. (NOT SO FAST)
A couple of games I missed out of my 'every game I've ever played' entry, because apparently I've got an odd blind spot for games with 'devil' in the name:

Devil May Cry: I still remember very nervously queueing up to buy this 15-rated game when I was only thirteen, but I got away with it! This game was trying so hard to be cool and it was hilarious. (Battle rankings included 'cool' and 'stylish'.) I also remember the cutscene where you obtain your sword, and by 'you obtain it' I mean 'it impales you through the chest'.

We Know the Devil: (LP) A short, strange and interesting visual novel about three teenagers staying overnight in an isolated shack at summer camp, waiting for the devil to make an appearance. My favourite of the trio is Jupiter, incredibly repressed and desperately trying to be a good person.

And now some more of The 100! I've now finished the first season and by this point I've entirely lost track of how many characters have died, but the number of survivors from the original 100, not counting Bellamy and Raven, must be somewhere between 76 and 53. Probably a lot closer to the latter.

Octavia: We should make peace with the grounders.
Riona: You know, Octavia's absolutely right. You should all listen to her.
Finn: We should make peace with the grounders.
Riona: Shut up, Finn; nobody likes you.

I think the problem with Finn is that he comes across as very sanctimonious and judgemental, but also he tried to keep things going with Clarke after Raven came to Earth. If he just committed to being a scumbag, I'd probably like him!

(I wrote the above before watching episode 2.03, in which Finn punches an unarmed, bound person in the face and then shoots him while everyone else is arguing over ethics, and, predictably, I now have slightly warmer feelings towards him. See, Finn, I'm not asking a lot of you. All you have to do is be interesting on occasion.)

I wasn't expecting the first time I got tearful at The 100 to be over the pain of Councillor Dickface, but life is full of surprises. (Kane has become considerably less of a dickface by the point I've now watched to, and I suppose he's no longer a councillor, but I still struggle not to think of him as Councillor Dickface.)

Something about the framing of the first episode made me assume that Kane was the one who told Bellamy to shoot Chancellor Jaha, and I was confused to watch further and go 'but... but Kane is clearly in love with Chancellor Jaha; why would he want to kill him?' It explained a lot when I learnt Kane wasn't the person who'd given the instruction.

I'm not sure the writers have realised that Kane is in love with Jaha, but he definitely, definitely is. Similarly, Monty and Jasper are clearly boyfriends, but nobody involved in this show has a clue that they're being presented as boyfriends, which makes for some odd scenes. I keep forgetting Monty/Jasper isn't technically canon and then going '????' when Jasper goes chasing after other people.

I might be up for some Kane/Abby. I was hoping, when Kane reluctantly sentenced Abby to a series of painful electric shocks, that he'd be administering them himself, but Abby furiously maintaining eye contact with Kane for as long as she's capable during her punishment was also pretty good.

(I checked the The World Ends With You tag on Tumblr after the Switch release and stumbled across someone saying it was wrong to 'ship two of the characters because it was an abusive dynamic. Yes, I know that one of them emotionally manipulated and murdered the other, but that's what makes it great. Healthy relationships are for real life!

At a pub, two days ago, one of my friends asked whether there was any fandom in which I'd written fanfiction but hadn't written anything horrible. I started looking through the fandoms I'd recently written for. I ended up having to go back seven years and twenty-five fandoms before concluding I'd never written anything troubling for Phineas and Ferb.)
rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)
Q: Riona, do you really have time to write mini-reviews of every game you've ever played?
A: I absolutely don't.
Q: And yet.
A: And yet!

Some of these are more just reminiscences than reviews, but I've said at least a line or two about every game. Possibly. I've almost certainly forgotten about some.

For the most part these are listed alphabetically, so you can easily track down any games you're interested in, but games in a series are listed together, so, for example, 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors, Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma are all under Z for Zero Escape, and World of Final Fantasy comes under F. I've put a (LP) next to games I've only experienced through Let's Plays. Flash games, text adventures and electronic versions of card, tile or board games are not included.

Games I first played after originally posting this entry are marked with an asterisk.

Thoughts on every game I've ever played, or close enough. )

I'm glad I've put this very important and necessary entry into the waiting world.
rionaleonhart: twewy: joshua kiryu is being fabulously obnoxious and he knows it. (is that so?)
Rei walked into me yesterday evening.

Riona: I'd say 'I'm sorry for elbowing you in the boob,' but you sort of boobed my elbow.
Rei: I did boob your elbow. I'm sorry. Don't worry; this bra has a lot of padding.
Riona: I'm... okay, I can't think of a better way to word this. I'm not afraid to touch your tit, Rei.

One of the best parts of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance is that Sora, a perpetual optimist who is used to interacting with Disney characters, meets Joshua Kiryu, cynical little shit from The World Ends With You.

Joshua: (goes on for ages about how Sora and Riku are in different versions of the same world, divided by an unknowable distance)
Sora: Don't worry. He's with me, even when it might seem like he's not.
Joshua: Then you two are lucky.
Sora: You and your friend are lucky too, Joshua.
Joshua: (laughs) I appreciate you saying that with conviction, even though you have no idea what you're talking about.

I love Joshua. It's weird to me that I love Joshua so much, given that I hated him when we first met in The World Ends With You, but somehow he ended up winning me over just by being unapologetically awful. Maaaaaybe a candidate for my all-time top ten fictional characters?

At some point I should put together a 'top ten fictional characters' list and make an entry where I just enthuse wildly about everyone on it. Ellie, Yuna, Patrick Jane and Squall Leonhart definitely belong on the list. Who else? This is going to be tricky.

I just thought 'maybe it'd be easier to talk about my favourite character from each of my fandoms' and then thought 'wait, how many fandoms do I actually have?'

Anyway! Joshua! Here's a terrible thought: has anyone ever written fanfiction in which Joshua Kiryu and Kokichi Oma meet? They'd try to piss each other off, fail, try to manipulate each other, fail, and then team up and make life absolutely unbearable for everyone around them.

I think this might need to exist, but I don't think I can write it, unfortunately. I can't really envision Joshua and Kokichi interacting. They're too similar! It's like trying to bring the same pole of two magnets together.

I never finished that World Ends With You fic in which Joshua's following Neku around, but nobody else can see him, so Neku's left going '...am I hallucinating, or is Joshua making himself invisible just to screw with me?' Maybe I should replay the game at some point and see if I can pick it up, because I do like the concept. (Of course I like the concept; it boils down to 'WHAT'S REAL?', which is the theme of half the things I write.)

Wait, I need to stop getting distracted by replaying things! I still haven't finished NieR: Automata!
rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (oh no no no)
I don't often post audience participation entries these days, simply because there's not much of an audience left to participate; Livejournal and Dreamwidth are very quiet places! But I'm fretting about various things at the moment (nothing insurmountable, things are probably going to be fine), and I could do with a distraction, so it's worth a try:

Ask any fictional character you think I might be able to manage a question, and I'll reply in-character as them with an answer (or possibly reply as myself going 'WHAT THE HELL, I CAN'T DO THIS'). Feel free to ask either as yourself or as another character.

You may, if you wish, ask multiple questions (perhaps of multiple characters) or attempt to engage the characters in extended conversation. I've attempted to answer as real people in the past, but I'm specifying fictional characters this time, I'm afraid!

(Alternatively, or in addition: name a canon you know I have at some point enjoyed, and I'll dig up and post an extract from the unfinished fanfiction I've almost certainly got lying around.)

Feel free to comment even if we haven't talked in six years! If you're not sure of my fandoms (I have approximately a billion fandoms), my tag list should give you an idea. Although for some reason I have a 'buffy' tag? Don't ask for Buffy; I've seen about four episodes and you'll be disappointed.

To avoid duplicates on the 'unfinished fanfiction' question, below are links to the different versions of this entry (and the list of fandoms I've thus far posted snippets for in each one):

Livejournal: The Mentalist, My Little Pony, Harry Potter
Dreamwidth: The Last of Us, Uncharted, Top Gear, Assassin's Creed, The World Ends With You, Dangan Ronpa, Ghost Trick, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Prison Break
rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (don't cross me)
[personal profile] ruuger is currently hosting the annual Multifandom Friendship Fic Fest; it's over here, if you're interested in participating!

Speaking of fanfiction: it's that time again, by which I mean 'the time when I post another instalment of alphabet ficsnippets' (a ficlet for each letter of the alphabet, each concerning two characters whose names begin with that letter). I've been writing these things since 2012 and I still haven't completed the alphabet. I am hopeless.

Previous instalments are here, here and here. Fandoms represented in this instalment are Final Fantasy VII (and Crisis Core), Final Fantasy XIII, Dangan Ronpa, Super Dangan Ronpa 2, Homestuck, Supernatural, The Wolf Among Us, The World Ends With You and Death Note.

Same-letter alphabet ficsnippets: C, N, V, W and Y. )

Only five more letters to go! Maybe I'll actually finish this one day.

While I'm here, I'm also going to post a couple more ficlets I wrote for Project Komaeda Makes Everyone Uncomfortable and Possibly Sleeps With Them All. Spoilers for the first two chapters of Dangan Ronpa.

Komaeda/Fujisaki and Komaeda/Maizono within. )

That's all for now! I hope you find something to enjoy amongst these many little snippets.
