You'll Never See It Coming.
Oct. 3rd, 2020 08:37 pmA couple of you have informed me that the protagonist of Persona 5 has two semi-canon names accepted in the fandom: Akira (not like Rei at all, unacceptable) and Ren (close to Rei, fine). Thank you! It's a lot easier to understand conversations about this game now.
A person who'd ranked her kindness up from 'inoffensive' to 'considerate' might start using one of those names for greater clarity, or indeed switch to 'Joker' to be completely unambiguous, but the soul of rebellion tells me to just keep calling him Rei.
I completed the first Palace and I do not have a single regret about playing on easy mode.
Morgana popping out of our rucksack to check out what we're doing whenever we take any action is extremely cute. (I find it really hard to remember that Morgana is a boy cat; the name is very confusing. Sorry, did I say 'cat'? I meant DEFINITELY HUMAN.)
Ryuji's glad I was there to keep him calm when the track team came to rile him up! ♥!
Rei's too scared to do more clinical trials for the shady doctor!
THE DOCTOR JUST TEXTED ME AND ASKED 'COULD YOU STOP BY, MY LITTLE GUINEA PIG?' AND I UNDERSTAND REI'S HESITATION.
'I like kids who listen to their superiors. Enjoy your medicine.' She's so scary!!
I had Rei study in the diner (it looks extremely cosy!) and eat the nostalgic steak, and Morgana commented afterwards that Rei was looking happy. I found myself smiling. I usually want to torture characters, but apparently the game opening straight off the bat with 'hey, this is Rei, he's being detained and beaten up, now we're flashing back to everyone being hostile to him because of a misunderstanding' has left me wanting some happiness for the poor kid.
Although I also want to push him into potentially dangerous unregulated clinical trials and see what happens. I'm multifaceted.
Sojiro: Ladies love a man who knows how to make coffee.
Guide: You should make Rei say 'yeah, I want the ladies to love me' for extra FRIENDSHIP POINTS with Sojiro!
Riona: Screw you; I don't want the ladies to love me. Ryuji is all I need. I'm saying 'I don't care about that stuff.'
'Why don't we go grab some ramen? Y'know, shake things up. I'll take you over to a special shop I know.' Things are going well with my new videogame boyfriend.
Ryuji's so earnest and sweet and sweary. It's great.
Ryuji reminds me a fair bit of Zell Dincht from Final Fantasy VIII. He gets frustrated easily and he doesn't command a lot of respect, but he's a fiercely loyal friend, very energetic, very open in his admiration of people, with a strong sense of compassion and justice. Both Zell and Ryuji can act without thinking things through sometimes and might come off as reckless at first glance, but in fact they have a tendency to worry. The further I get through writing this paragraph, the more I want them to meet.
Zell/Squall was my first real ship, so I suppose it makes sense that Ryuji/Rei has caught my attention.
'Time passes so quickly in this game,' I find myself thinking, before looking up and realising how much time has passed in real life while I've been playing it.
