I spent today with

reipan and Yuffie, two of my closest friends. We rewatched the first and third High School Musical films.

Oh, a making-fun-of-ridiculous-films session! I thought, when the idea of a High School Musical rewatch was proposed. This should be fun!

I had evidently forgotten that there is not a shred of irony in my love of High School Musical. I love those films in an absolutely sincere, wholehearted way. I love the characters. I love the songs. I love TROY AND GABRIELLA, HOW ARE THEY SO CUTE, IT'S OUTRAGEOUS. I started crying towards the end of the third film. I'm not even ashamed.

(Well, perhaps I'm slightly ashamed.)

We had a bit of a singalong when we knew the words (we knew the words, it turned out, to possibly too many of the songs), and I noticed that I always gravitated towards singing Troy's part when he featured in a song. I think I feel a sort of kinship with him because we both have enormous eyebrows.

Because evidently a High School Musical singalong wasn't ridiculous enough, we also accidentally watched (or rewatched, in my case) all six episodes of Free! to date. Afterwards:

Riona: I'm still trying to work out how I can write about Haru losing his virginity to a swimming pool.
Rei: I think he'd just lose his virginity in a swimming pool, but be thinking about the water the whole time.
Riona: Maybe that's the real reason Rin's so annoyed with him.

This is going into the 'UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WRITE THIS' file, right next to 'the cast of High School Musical are locked down and instructed to kill each other in a Dangan Ronpa situation'. Even though I'm having ideas about the High School Musical/Dangan Ronpa crossover, no matter how hard I try not to. If you're not Sharpay, there's an obvious advantage to committing the first murder: everyone will assume that the murderer is Sharpay, so you've got a good chance of getting away with it. But I'm not going to write this, I swear.

Speaking of Free!: somehow I seem to end up 'shipping a new Haru pairing with every episode. This is an exaggeration, but not a large one. I think I'm now 'shipping Haru/Rin, Haru/Makoto, Haru/Kou and Haru/water. Haru/water beats all the others senseless, of course, but I still seem to be well on my way to 'shipping Haruka Nanase with everyone in the world, possibly including you.

I didn't think Haru/Makoto would ever really catch my interest - it just seemed too nice and functional - but the depth of Haru's concern for Makoto in episode six really touched me. And I'm fairly certain by this point that Makoto is at least slightly in love with Haru. Sorry, Makoto; you're going to have to compete with every body of water in Japan.

I could have told you that about your unironic love of High School Musical. If those movies were a person, you'd date them, buy them lots of lovely pink outfits, and run around singing in public and giggling adorkably.

I am very much looking forward to both "In no circumstances" stories. They sound excellent!

I'm now trying to figure out how to shamelessly enable you to write the Dangan Ronpa idea without knowing anything about HSM.

There is a Troy! And Sharpey! And Sharpey has a brother who may or may not be Troy, and anything involving bad things happening to Sharpey's brother would probably cause her angst and sadness of some sort! And there are other people, who probably also have names!

...that is pretty much the limit of my High School Musical knowledge.

I like that most of your High School Musical knowledge stems from your attempts to persuade me to write a Silent Hill crossover.

I just Googled it, and apparently Troy is not her brother. Maybe there could be a murder where Ryan decides to take out someone who he thinks is a threat to Sharpay, and then when Sharpay finds out she sets herself up to look like she did it so that at least her brother will survive, and in the end everyone but Ryan dies because no one can quite wrap their heads around her being weirdly noble?

I'm not sure the cast is large enough for it to work! It's also, I suspect, a bit short on potential murderers.

Easily fixed by the addition of doppelgangers. Bonus points if no one, including the doppelgangers, is quite sure who the original ones are, but the doppelgangers all have latent ticking time bomb insanities.

Intriguing! It'd make solving the murders extremely difficult, though; if Sharpay's footprints were found at the scene of the crime, how do you know whether it was Sharpay A or Sharpay 1? (Everyone else is A and B, but both Sharpays adamantly refused to be B, so this was the only solution they could think of.)

Siobhan had a twinge of irony when she watched the first one. When they come in and they're told they're too late to audition...

SIOBHAN: (dry as a DESERT) So they don't get to audition, so they don't get in the musical. End of movie.

Free! has replaced the Olympics in my angry It doesn't work that way!!!! bellowing-related-to-aquatic-sports-sex.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love watching it because it's ridonkulous but also a rather solidly good anime. But ohhhhhhh, so much bellowing about chlorine and male yeast infections.

I don't know a lot about aquatic sports sex (SO I DEFINITELY CAN'T WRITE THE FIC (assuming you meant the Rin/Haru/water fic rather than the one about High School Musical characters murdering each other), DON'T ENCOURAGE ME), but certainly nobody in Free! knows how to wear a swimming cap.

Flidget and I decided that someone needs to write a Free!/Silent Hill crossover, and Haru's Silent Hill is all empty, drained swimming pools in disrepair.

...that could actually be fun.

Haru would end up sitting quietly in one of the empty pools, waiting for it to rain. It never would.

Ahh! I just watched High School Musical and the first sequel like, literally last week for the first time! I WAS ALSO SURPRISED BY HOW LEGITIMATELY CUTE IT IS. I am delighted that you are also excited by it!

I really like the first one, but the second one agitated me because I felt like the solution was too nice to Troy, who hadn't really worked for it. Is the third one better?

Hee, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I'm very fond of the third one! The second is probably the weakest of the three; we skipped it in this rewatch. The third has a lot of great songs and better production values than its predecessors, as it was made for the cinema rather than television. I'd definitely recommend giving it a watch if you liked the first.

The last episode made Haru/Waterfall CANON.

I WAS SO PLEASED BY THE HARU/WATERFALL BIT. Haru/water is the most wonderful pairing. Sometimes I wonder whether my Haru/water 'shipping is a bit too weirdly sincere, but I've concluded that I cannot love this pairing any more than Haru loves water.

I was like 'COME ON DO WATER' when Nagisa asked him for a romantic story and then THE SHOW DID. Are we sure Haru wanted to give Makoto mouth to mouth or if he wanted to kiss the remains of the ocean?

I am also impressed how that episode was basically massive shipping fuel for everyone. Oh dear, four young men in swimming trunks in an abandoned building, however shall they stay warm and spend the night?

How about Haru/Sousuke? For some reason I love their antagonistic thing (that gets resolved). It also leaves me free (heh) to ship Makoto and Rin, which is another dynamic that I'm drawn to. But it's such a weird show in that honestly you could mix and match so much! Ha.

I don't remember Sousuke that well, but I seem to recall him being super in love with Rin, so it didn't really occur to me to ship him with anyone else! I'll have to keep an eye out for his dynamic with Haru if I ever rewatch.

Well there is that too! Honestly I think you could take the four - Haru, Makoto, Rin, and Sousuke - and just make any combo and it would work somehow. Because yeah, like you said, Sousuke and Rin is pretty obvious, in a similar way that Makoto and Haru are. Plus Haru and Rin, of course. I think the only one I haven't read is Makoto and Sousuke, although I won't swear to it. Regardless, I am now so tempted to go look for some! Haha. :D
