rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (waiting for you (anniesj))

RAGE.

So. I've been following Doctor Who, missing Captain Jack hugely but secure in the knowledge that at least he'll be in the 2007 series. And then the BBC releases this.

Returning cast members include John Barrowman who will be making an appearance in the series finale.

What?

No, seriously. What?

I have no idea how I managed to fall completely and hopelessly and utterly in love with a character who only appeared in five episodes, but I did. I spent the entirety of the 2006 series desperately hoping that he would put in an appearance despite the BBC's claims to the contrary, but he didn't. Admittedly hoping for something that the BBC had explicitly denied may have been a bit silly, but I hoped for it regardless. We had been promised that he would return in 2007, however, so I was patient.

And now we find out that he's only going to be in the finale?

We're not even promised anything remotely substantial! 'Make an appearance' is an alarming phrase - as other people have mentioned, Tennant 'made an appearance' in Parting of the Ways. At best, it sounds like he'll show up at the very end, say 'hi' and then the credits will roll and we'll have to wait until 2008 for any real Captain Jack-ness. At worst, it sounds like he'll show up briefly and then leave Doctor Who again, never to return.

I AM INDESCRIBABLY DISTRESSED BY THIS. I LOVE CAPTAIN JACK AND CANNOT ENDURE BEING SO CRUELLY DEPRIVED OF HIM. I didn't like this year's series nearly as much as last year's, and, while that may be mainly because of the change in Doctors, Captain Jack being present would undoubtedly have improved it.

I WANT HIM BACK I WANT HIM BACK DAMMIT. THE OT3 BEING DESTROYED WASN'T ENOUGH? YOU HAVE TO MAKE US WAIT UNTIL THE FINALE FOR JACK TO RETURN? ONE EPISODE, TWO AT THE MOST, AND HE'S JUST 'MAKING AN APPEARANCE'? SO NOT FAIR.

Martha had better be the awesomest companion ever. And also Mickey and Jake should come back even though that would make no sense whatsoever. Come on, BBC, enough cruelty. Do something unexpectedly nice for once.

If Torchwood is not fantastic, I will destroy the BBC offices.

In less rage-filled news, I am now really very curious about how many fandoms Top Gear can be crossed over with. [livejournal.com profile] kadrin's written the beginning of a Top Gear/Utena fic, [livejournal.com profile] dracothelizard is working on Top Gear/Stargate/Doctor Who (the Stig is a Timelord whose TARDIS has the form of a Reliant Robin! Genius!), and I've written a quite alarming amount of a Top Gear/Harry Potter fic and may have sort of written a Top Gear/Silent Hill snippet for [livejournal.com profile] gayjunglefever's birthday. I've never known such an unlikely crossover fandom.

I suppose not.

I wonder why Due South gets crossed over so much?

I'm not sure, really... maybe it's just the facination of seeing how people react when faced with the unfailingly polite Benton Fraser. Plus, of course, Due South is the kind of show where random weird stuff (ghosts, for example) just happens, so there's already a forgiveness there for things that are a bit odd.

...

That show sounds quite nice, actually. And here was me thinking it was just some Canadian version of Kommissaris Rex!

I have no idea what that is, but if you've not seen Due South, you should absolutely get your hands on a torrent or two, but do it in order, if you start with series three, (or series one of the new version as some of the more hardcore fans insist...) it's all a bit too confusing if you've not seen the early ones.

It's also insanely slashy, mostly because the people involved knew the show was being slashed, and encouraged it.

"I have no idea what that is,"

It's a German krimi about a German shepherd police dog who works with a team of three policemen in Austria (So actually an Austrian krimi, but it's in German) and they solve crime and eat breadrolls.

Sounds interesting!

... *blinks*

Well, there is a wolf in Due South, but he's deaf and lipreads...

"There is nothing more frustrating than playing hide and seek with a deaf wolf."

Sounds interesting!

It is. I actually think you'd really like it. It's silly, slashy, good-natured and eminently quotable. Plus, the mountie is easy on the eye.

It's better than that, really. But I watched it when I was younger. Look, dog + not bad-looking cop solve crimes in German! And there's breadrolls and some silly attempts at comedy. It's actually quite all right. Inspector Rex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspector_Rex) on Wikipedia.

I think I may be intrigued. But I've got Jonathan Creek to download first. That's silly and quotable and easy on the eye too. Plus, crime-solving!

It does sound quite fun, actually. Wonder if it was ever subbed into English...

Hee, brilliant. I keep meaning to get hold of some Creek, all I have is a fast fading video of Black Canary (I love that in that one the detective is constantly a step ahead of Jonathan, and it doesn't hurt that he's played by Rik Mayall...) and I think I might have the pilot somewhere (It's a shame ASH didn't stay on as Adam...) but that's it.

Due South has crime solving too! Just most of the cases are really weird...

"(I love that in that one the detective is constantly a step ahead of Jonathan, and it doesn't hurt that he's played by Rik Mayall...)"

Rik Mayall! Genius. I knew he was in some episode, but I didn't as what. Doesn't Adrian have a more regular role in season 4?

Well, you could use BitTorrent to download it, and www.isohunt.com to hunt for torrents. It's really quite easy :) and my season 1 is here!

I know nothing about Due South beyond what you've mentioned here, but that is so incredibly awesome. I've heard of encouraging fanfic before, but never specifically slash.

All you need to know about Due South (http://community.livejournal.com/crack_van/81668.html), courtesy of Crack_Van :) If you're getting into Life on Mars, you'll LOVE Due South. It's weirder, and there's no time travel, but it's all coming from the same place...

The whole encouraging the slashers thing came about in the last two series. Paul Gross was well aware of the slashers by this point, and threw them a line or an injoke wherever he could. I think the main reason more people slash Ray K with Fraser than Ray V is that it was set up that way.

Sorry for getting my fandom theroies all over your journal... :)

Heeee!

Thanks :) I like this idea, it's scarily easy to stick the TG3 in all sorts of places! Also, if you get to know Dief, you'll realise he's developed a liking for being driven around in fast cars, so it makes sense he'd jump into the Zonda...
