You Know, I Thought The Shadow Thing Would Be Figurative.
And so we come to the finale, and the first half of it is a truly Jackcentric episode! It's about bloody time.
Captain Jack Harkness/Captain Jack Harkness was wonderful. From the moment they met I was thinking 'oh, please let there be Jack/Jack', and then every scene between them was just a little bit slashier, and the end of every scene seemed as if it might be their last parting, so I was thinking 'WTF IT CAN'T END THERE' every time. And then it was the actual ending of their encounter - and then there was the real actual ending, in which we finally got the snogging that the entire episode had been progressively teasing us with.
Torchwood is a fangirl's dream. (Also, I sincerely hope that the fandom starts calling it 'Jackack' or 'JackcaJ' or something similarly ridiculous. I'm not generally one for pairing names, but I do have a certain fondness for the particularly bizarre ones. Are people calling Gwen/Tosh 'Gosh' yet?)
'Captain Jack Harkness' was, I think, my favourite episode of the series. I thought that they built up the relationship between Jack and 'James' very well, especially considering that they only had an episode in real time and an evening in Torchwood time to do so. Also, how many fandoms are there where you can think 'he should totally kiss him' and then have it actually happen? I hadn't been spoiled for this episode at all, so there was always an element of 'will they?' suspense, which was lovely because I had been spoiled for practically all the other overtly slashy moments in the series.
I have realised, with this finale, that I actually liked Torchwood rather more than I thought I did (or perhaps these episodes were just particularly good?). I mean, when Jack was taken away by the TARDIS, I realised - to my absolute astonishment - that I was actually sort of distressed. I would never have expected to be anything less than thrilled by the Doctor's coming for Jack, but it turns out that, without my even realising it, I have become fond of the Torchwood team and Jack's place within it and his relationships with his colleagues.
Speaking of which, I should probably mention the kiss with Ianto. It was treated as something very normal and natural and unremarkable - or, at least, as close as you can get to those things when you're welcoming your lover back from the dead - which was actually quite nice, because it was Torchwood saying 'Look, it doesn't always have to be "LOOK, WE HAVE HOMOSEXUALITY, AREN'T WE EDGY AND AVANT-GARDE" because a homosexual relationship can be treated as a normal relationship that just happens to be between two men or women.'
ALSO OMG RHYS. OMG OMG OMG RHYS. I ABSOLUTELY HAD A FIT WHEN SHE HAD THE VISION AND WHEN HE WAS STABBED AND I THOUGHT THERE WAS NO HOPE AND HE WOULD NEVER COME BACK TO LIFE BUT HE DID! HE DID! THANK YOU, TORCHWOOD, I LOVE YOU.
Also, gigantic demon bull destroying the world with its killer shadow: most ridiculous thing on Torchwood to date?

AND OMG JACKACK IS WHAT I SHALL SAY FOREVER. I blame you. But the kiiiiiiiiss was perfect and their little sad-dance and it was so gooood.
I think these two episodes were particularly good, and I say that as a person who became steadily more dis-illusioned with Torchwood as it progressed. Yaye for Jack!
no subject
Yes! Seriously, if people actually do start calling it 'Jackack', I will be filled with glee. I firmly believe that pairing names should always have an element of mocking oneself.
no subject
Okay. Jackack it is then.
I was also a Doctor/Rose/Jack person. And a Doctor/Rose and a Doctor/Jack person. And I want to know What Will Happen when Jack meets Ten, and if the PtB do a cop-out and go all 'Oh hey, they've met before this and Jack totally knows that Rose has gone and the Doctor is now a weasel', I will not be happy.

if the PtB do a cop-out and go all 'Oh hey, they've met before this and Jack totally knows that Rose has gone and the Doctor is now a weasel', I will not be happy.'
Aaaah! They can't do that! Um, can they? (Also, 'and the Doctor is now a weasel' made me crack up. I AM SORRY, MR TENNANT.
I want Jack to kiss him. Or hit him. Or both, at the same time. It will be awesome.

Particularly: I don't dislike Tennant's Doctor, but he just doesn't feel like the Doctor to me and I want Jack to kiss him. Or hit him. Or both, at the same time. It will be awesome. <---- PLEASE.
We've been good
crazyfangirls, we deserve a big Jack/Doctor meet!no subject
I can't wait to see these episodes...

I hope you enjoy them! I definitely think that they're much better than the general standard of the rest of the series.

Jack/Jack love. Also Jack/Ianto love...damn xD Can't work out which I like more.
How did the TARDIS appear and whisk him away in thirty seconds flat? Usually that's about as long as it takes for it to fade in in the first place.

This made me burst into hopeless giggles. Yes, I've been brooding a bit on the sheer 'DEATH IS THE END. THE END'ness of it. Admittedly, that's what I believe, but it's a horrible thing to believe and I don't want to believe it. STOP FORCING MY BELIEFS ON ME, TORCHWOOD.
I expected to really, really like Jack/Ianto, but I'm just not the huge Jack/Ianto fangirl I thought I would be. I cannot understand why not! Jack/Jack, on the other hand, is the best thing ever and simultaneously makes me ecstatically happy and breaks my heart.
Um, maybe Gwen hearing it go away was a sort of 'SIXTY SECONDS LATER' thing? OR MAYBE THE TARDIS ALTERS ITS LANDING SPEED WHEN IT IS CONVENIENT TO THE PLOT. COME ON, IF THE SONIC SCREWDRIVER HAS A SETTING FOR REATTACHING BARBED WIRE THE TARDIS CAN HAVE SOME DAFT FEATURES AS WELL.

COME ON, IF THE SONIC SCREWDRIVER HAS A SETTING FOR REATTACHING BARBED WIRE THE TARDIS CAN HAVE SOME DAFT FEATURES AS WELL.
I think a setting for reattaching barbed wire could come in very handy...

The bit about barbed wire, that is. Not, er, the bit about death. Although, if the bit about death was supposed to be kinky, it obviously went even more over my head.
Please, I beg of you, don't make any perverted comments regarding the phrase 'over my head'.

SEEING AS YOU MADE THAT COMMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE IT CLEARLY DID NOT.
FOO.

It does bother me, though, that it looks as if, if there's another series of Torchwood, the good Captain probably won't be in it, and I'm not sure I care enough about the Torchwood team minus Jack to watch. Alas.

I've seen it on an icon!
"Also, gigantic demon bull destroying the world with its killer shadow: most ridiculous thing on Torchwood to date?"
Cyberwoman punches a pterodactyl.
no subject
...yes, that's true, isn't it? I cannot believe I forgot that there's a scene in which an android, covered in barbecue sauce, punches a pterodactyl in the face while the Torchwood team escape on the slowest lift ever. I AM SORRY THAT I EVER CALLED YOU RIDICULOUS, GIGANTIC DEMON BULL.
no subject
But clearly Gosh is better!
That monster was a load of bull, wasn't it?
Sorry about that.

...
...You are an awful, awful person and must be killed for the good of all.
So, er, may I ask what your opinion on the episodes was beyond dreadful, dreadful puns?
no subject
And I have rambled a lot about it in my LJ. (http://dracothelizard.livejournal.com/347635.html)
no subject
...so did I! I spent most of the killing scenes going "hang on, they're actually dying in his shadow? Wow, I really wasn't interpreting it so literally.
I agree completely with your reaction to Jack's departure. "But! Wait! He can't go because--Torchwood--Ianto--oh no--but! The doctor! I want him to be in the TARDIS with the Doctor, that's good, isn't it? Isn't it?! WHAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK ANY MORE". etc.
AND THE RHYS THING OMG. I knew that Rhys was going to die, and I was pretty sure it was going to be forever, and that they'd actually killed the character off, and oh my god I was pretty much doing the same thing as Gwen but more inside myself rather than, you know, hitting people and screaming, because my family might have objected. And then he was ok and cleaning the oven and OH RHYS DON'T SCARE US LIKE THAT AGAIN BY DYING AND THEN NOT.
no subject
OH RHYS DON'T SCARE US LIKE THAT AGAIN BY DYING AND THEN NOT.
YES EXACTLY. But, er, Rhys, you must not take this as a demand that any death in the future should be permanant. That is not what we want at all.
It seems odd that there was a lot of dislike of Mickey during Nine's series, but I haven't seen any dislike of Rhys, even though they're both the 'lovely boyfriend who gets left behind' character. I'm certainly not complaining, because everyone should love Rhys (and indeed Mickey - probably the thing that I liked most about Ten's series was that most people seemed to come around to Mickey during it), but I do wonder why.
no subject
That's basically what I got through when attempting to just reply to your posts. I had to stop myself from writing a comment just saying "...and yes, I agree with that entirely! Ho hum," over and over again.
No, actually, I've just re-read what I did write, and that was pretty much it.
(so why stop now.) I am completely with you on the Mickey thing! Why did everyone hate him?! I thought he was so lovely, even in the first series when he was a bit useless and didn't help much and cried and things, because that's what a normal person would do. It's what I'd do!
(They won't kill Rhys again, will they? Suzie and Jack have died enough to compensate all the other characters in the series, surely. *clings to Rhys*)

This made me burst into giggles. It's so true!
Also, YOUR ICON IS MUCH PRETTIER THAN MINE AND I AM OVERCOME WITH ENVY.

Loved these two episodes - the Jack/Jack was so beautifully built up that when they did kiss I was just one enormous SQUEE! (Yep. I scared my cats again.)
My appetite is now well and truly wet for DW - I prefer Ten to Nine (though I did like Nine lots). As an Old Fan (older than she wants to think!), I find Ten has all sorts of elements of other Doctors and that just appeals to me.
no subject
He is. He really is an absolute saint for putting up with all she puts him through. I was furious when she knocked him out, locked him up and then abandoned him.
While I'm not a particular Ten fan, it's occurred to me that I might actually come to like him a lot more once I get to see him alongside Jack. For reasons I can't quite work out, Jack has the amazing ability to amplify the awesomeness of anyone he interacts with.
