Gordon Brown Will Cut Out Your Liver.
'This facility contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects and reproductive harm' is not a sign you want to see on your hotel for the night.
Anyway! I met
livii today; I was terribly nervous and awkward, as I usually am when meeting people in Real Life, but she was very patient and lovely and tolerant of my unfortunate tendency to lapse into absolute silence every three minutes, and we spent an afternoon talking about Harry Potter and Doctor Who. Which was awesome!
Some points that came up in the discussion:
- The Muggle Prime Minister (from the first chapter of Half-Blood Prince) is fantastic. Has anyone written fanfiction about him? Someone's probably paired him up with Fudge, haven't they?
- Phineas Nigellus is,
livii tells me, mentioned in the film of Order of the Phoenix (I haven't yet seen it). The fact that he isn't cut out entirely seems to point towards the possibility of his having some significance in Book Seven, doesn't it? Or is that just wishful thinking?
- Now that Dumbledore has a portrait in the Headmaster's office, are we going to get some hot hot Dumbledore/Phineas portrait-slash?
- I totally need to write a series of drabbles or shortfics pairing Phineas Nigellus up with every character in the Harry Potter series.
livii advises that I begin with a house-elf. He would absolutely hate them. This project may not be an easy one.
- The concept of Metamorphmagi has been introduced but has not yet become hugely significant. I will be very surprised if it doesn't play a part in Book Seven. My theory is that Luna Lovegood and Hagrid are the same person.
-
livii came up with so many ideas I would like to see in Book Seven that it would have to be a good few thousand pages long to fit them all in; among them were Percy's reconciliation with his family and Neville 'getting' Bellatrix - not by killing her, as Neville is far too sweet to kill anyone, but by playing a hilarious practical joke on her with one of Fred and George's fake wands.
- The books should end with Harry, Ron and Hermione in a contented, mutually satisfying ménage-a-trois relationship. It is, after all, far less strange than the idea of Hagrid's parents.
- We would both very much like to read Hogwarts: A History and hear Professor Binns' reportedly dull History of Magic lessons. The conversation, as I recall it, went something like this:
"It'll say 'Professor Binns was droning on about goblin rebellions' and I'll go 'wait, what? I want to hear this!'"
"Exactly!"
(pause)
"You know, that's just the sort of dropped-in detail that might become significant later."
"Ah, yes! It'd fit in with all the rallying-the-wizarding-races in the later books."
"Maybe the Gringotts goblins are going to rebel."
"And everyone will go 'Oh, no! What did we do last time? If only we'd paid attention in History of Magic!'"
"Professor Binns will save the day."
(EDIT: Oh, yes, and Hermione and Ginny's dislike of Fleur is totally Rowling's dig at the character-bashers.)
I declined her very kind offer to drive me to the hotel, went out to find it and immediately got spectacularly lost. The Pacific Ocean is surprisingly hard to find.
Anyway! I met

(Anonymous) 2007-07-19 10:40 am (UTC)(link)Oh, dear, it will. And I think probably Phineas/Dobby will result in the world EXPLODING.
That is glorious and marvellous, and also HILARIOUS. Oh, poor Fudge.
Also HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Yes, I tell you this A DAY LATE and in a late and pointless comment. I would write reviews, but I'm rubbish. GREATEST BIRTHDAY GREETING EVER, OH YES. I am sure you had a marvellous day in Americaland, anyway.
