Life Is Like A Bee That You Can't Follow.
WELCOME BACK, SUPERNATURAL. OH HOW I HAVE MISSED YOU.
Wow, I wasn't expecting Dean to come back so quickly. I actually thought he was still in Hell when he woke up; I thought Hell was putting him through the nightmare of being buried alive, and then when the camera zoomed out I thought that Hell had let him crawl out of the grave only to strand him on a little island of grass in the middle of literal nowhere, and then when he found the shop I thought that Hell was creating the illusion that he had escaped just to rip it away (the lack of scarring, absence of people and SUDDEN SILENT HILL ELECTRONICS BEHAVIOUR OH NO certainly didn't seem to contradict this belief), and then when he called Bobby I thought Dean might have found himself in a world in which he never existed, and then when he met Bobby I thought Bobby was just a Hell-created illusion, and it took Bobby realising it was actually Dean and hugging him for me to start thinking that, okay, maybe this wasn't Hell.
I am surprised and pleased that Dean has not become a demon! Sam, on the other hand, appears to be going down a worrying road.
I have to say I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get a few episodes of Ruby possessing Dean's body. Because that would have been amazing. (I'm not sure I like the new Ruby. I really loved Katie Cassidy's Ruby, and now the new Ruby says things I can't imagine Cassidy's Ruby saying and makes expressions I can't imagine Cassidy's Ruby making, and that troubles me. I mean, I'm glad Ruby the character is still around, but I miss Cassidy. New Ruby seems too earnest, somehow. Cassidy's Ruby took trouble with a roll of her eyes; New Ruby makes a very serious face and speaks with too much emphasis. But the other demons seemed fairly freaked out by Castiel, so maybe that's deliberate? I SHALL TRY TO FORGIVE YOU FOR BEING NEITHER CASSIDY NOR ACKLES, NEW RUBY, AND THEN I PROMISE I'LL GIVE YOU A CHANCE.)
Also, I'd have liked to see more of Sam going insane over his brother's death. I suppose we got that from Mystery Spot, but still. Perhaps there will be flashbacks?
That said, it was an excellent episode! I was thoroughly gripped, and then it ended and I went WHAT WHAT IT'S OVER ALREADY? It looks like we could have a very interesting season ahead of us! Also, I am intrigued by the demons with the burnt-out eyes and the dead hosts. Castiel tells us that he tried to warn the medium not to look upon his true form, but has he been killing demons without regard for the people they're possessing? THAT'S NOT VERY ANGELIC, DUDE. (Also, I don't trust anyone who makes electronics go all Silent Hill.)
OH OH ALSO: WINCHESTER HUGS. MUTUAL WINCHESTER HUGS. WINCHESTERS HUGGING WINCHESTERS WHO ARE HUGGING BACK. ABOUT BLOODY TIME.
Also also: ahahaha, I loved Bobby throwing holy water over Dean. BOBBY. HOW ARE YOU SO AWESOME?
Also also also: about half my flist seem to think that the girl Sam was probably shagging was Ruby. I didn't think so when I first watched, but now, looking back at the scenes, I honestly can't tell. Stupid low lighting in the Ruby-talking-to-Sam scene. Stupid inability to recognise faces. The idea of Sam probably shagging Ruby is intriguing, and Sam sharing a hotel room with her makes sense, but wouldn't Ruby have had a more surprised reaction upon opening the door to Dean? And why the 'Kelly.' 'Chrissie' exchange if she's actually Ruby? I'M SO CONFUSED.

I had issues with S3 for a lot of reasons, but Ruby was my biggest problem with it. This new ep was awesome in so many ways, but for me, bringing in a new actress for Ruby made all the difference in the world -- it was crazy!
I actually liked Ruby, for the first time ever. I think cause this actress did more than the monotone 'angry snark' - she had real emotions! And expressions! She wasn't flat, she had depth. She didn't need to emasculate Sam in every scene she was in to have presence. They felt like cop partners when they were talking at the table -- like people who were friends, and had each others backs, and that was SO AWESOME. That's all wonderful, juicy, interesting character dynamics for me.

I'm feeling more optimistic about her already. Thank you!

If it makes you feel any better too, one of my theories is that they might have different actors/actresses for the character. I'm 100% unspoiled, so that's just me pondering in my head. I think it'd be cool to have a recurring character without a recurring actor.
I especially liked when she talked about not coming in between Sam and Dean -- because last season, Ruby didn't really care about that, so to me, I heard it as "Well, I still don't like Dean, but he's important to you, Sam, and you're my friend, so :|". Like they'd bonded over the four months, and now she's supporting him and being his buddy-cop. Hee! Sorry, that dynamic is just really neat to me XD The platonic, soldiers-in-arms kind of relationship.

And there's clinging and near-crying (not just from me, I'm sure of it) and WHAT THE HELL TOOK YOU BOYS SO LONG?!
That episode went by way too fast for me, I want more. And I was so torn between wanting to throttle Dean and wanting to mother him in the 'You think you don't deserve to be saved?' bit. I love that he still has his own massive problems but can a problem get better on this show, just once, please?
no subject
Man, yes. I was starting to fear that we'd never get a reciprocal hug. THANK YOU, KRIPKE. PERHAPS YOU ARE NOT PURE EVIL AFTER ALL.
but can a problem get better on this show, just once, please?
Ahahaha, highly unlikely. Dean said it himself: good things don't happen in his experience.

Weirdly enough, I kind of don't want Sam and New!Ruby to be shagging, even though I kinda-sorta shipped Sam/Old!Ruby. Mostly because Sam and New!Ruby seem like friends and that is an AWESOME dynamic. Also, because I like the idea that Sam and Ruby have become comfortable enough with each other that Ruby just bounces around the motel room in her underwear. And her bras are all over the place because she's terrible at keeping a room clean, and just flings her clothes wherever (the 'Kelly' 'Chrissie' exchange confused me too, though. Perhaps she was poking fun a Sam? That sounds, er, kind of probable). YES, THAT IS IT.
no subject
Yes, that struck me as incredibly weird! Ruby never seemed that interested in the Sam/Dean relationship as anything other than a way to get Sam to listen to her. I'd like some sort of look back at how the relationship between Sam and Ruby developed in Dean's absence so I can actually, you know, believe that.
Also, because I like the idea that Sam and Ruby have become comfortable enough with each other that Ruby just bounces around the motel room in her underwear.
Hee hee hee, awesome! And yes, perhaps they arranged that the name would be Kelly, and Ruby said 'Chrissie' when Sam called her that because making him look like an insensitive git in front of the others amused her. Because Ruby is fabulously evil.

because making him look like an insensitive git in front of the others amused her
And whenever they go out to bars or diners to discuss, uh, stuff, and Sam looks like he's going to Get Some later on, she immediately pounces on him and pretends to be his long suffering girlfriend. Sam is not amused.

Ahahaha, oh, yes. I hope people are writing fanfiction about Ruby being a gigantic pain in Sam's backside over the past four months and the two of them developing a real friendship despite (or even because of) that.

All I can really say is *FLAIL* BOYS. HUGGING EACH OTHER. ♥ FINALLY.
I miss Katie Cassidy terribly right about now. But this is SPN, so I'm more than willing to give the new girl a chance. Hell, I hated Cassidy AND her character at the begining of S3, so if I love them now...
... has he been killing demons without regard for the people they're possessing? THAT'S NOT VERY ANGELIC, DUDE.
AGREED. I don't trust the guy. (Although he is very pretty. In fact, I was initally thinking YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE PRETTY, ONLY WINCHESTERS CAN BE PRETTY. Ha.

Ahahaha, me too, actually. My initial reaction is 'IS THAT CASTIEL? HE IS WAY TOO GOOD-LOOKING.'
It amuses me that there are already Castiel fancommunities. We've only just met the guy!

Somebody suggested that when Ruby and Sam were just back from some demon-killing adventure and that's why he had just gotten out of the shower, and she was barely dressed. Which is a theory that I like. :)
I do love the idea of them being so comfortable with each other. Friends with a demon! Oh, Sammy. He's so dark side.

Also, :| I don't like the new Ruby. :( I want the old Ruby back. THIS IS LAME.

Bobby = totes awesome. to the max. Love.
I think it was Ruby in Sam's room. I think she ships Sam/Dean. I thought the 'Kelly'/'Chrissie' exchange was acting for Dean's benefit. I would have liked to see proof of Sam's grief. I may have to write fic. I may have to use a Wincesty icon. Sorry about that Riona.

BOBBY IS SO AMAZING. I can't believe he's survived this long! YOU KEEP AT IT, BOBBY.
And, hey, even if we may differ on our interpretations of the type of love I can't deny that Supernatural is an epic love story.
no subject
It totes is an epic love story. Even if you do read them as "just brothers" rather than "code-word brothers", they still have a rather crazily intense relationship which doesn't really allow room for anyone else. Except maybe the Impala. That car really makes the show worth it for me. If the bastard Kripke did in with the car, I'd stop watching. Ok, maybe I'd watch for an episode or two, just to see Dean grieve so prettily (as he does), but then I'd quit it. For reals. But I doubt they'll do that. Or they'd have some storyline about rescuing the car from hell and Dean making yet another bargain for his soul and Sam being all emo (what's new?) and feeling less special because Dean made a bargain for someone else, not him. And Dean and the Impala being reunited and one whole episode being a soft-focus man/car porno (which is not that far from the show as it is, Dean/Impala = cannon OTP. Also the loving and semi-erotic pans across the Impala that are already in so much of the show. Etc.) Erm. Should I stop talking now? ;P

Oh God, did you see or not see the blood red walls of the bathroom in which Dean has his flashbacks? And he is staring into the mirror over the sink and everything. OBVIOUSLY DEAN IS TRYING TO RIP OFF JAMES SUNDERLAND. DON'T DO IT, DEAN. I DON'T WANT YOU WITHIN 500 MILES OF PYRAMID HEAD.

...OKAY, I MEANT TO SAY 'NEVER GO TO SILENT HILL' THERE AND BECAME CONFUSED BECAUSE I WAS LISTENING TO CAMP ROCK MUSIC AT THE SAME TIME.
YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T GO TO CAMP ROCK EITHER, THOUGH. I IMAGINE IT WOULD MAKE YOU VERY ANGRY.
