It's All Starting To Make No Sense.
Oct. 1st, 2008 07:54 pmI suspect the third ukulele may be the point at which you should start considering the possibility that you have a problem. I mean, I'd have an excuse if I were a member of some sort of ukulele band, or if I were actually, you know, good at playing the ukulele. I am neither of these things. But I got a little soprano Lanikai as a going-back-to-university present to myself anyway, and it is so beautiful and it is incredibly lovely to play and I adore it.
I have been rewatching the first season of Supernatural with
reipan! And I generally think of the second season as the place where Supernatural became really good, but rewatching the first has made me realise that it was a very strong show even then. Even if there are quite a few 'AS YOU KNOW, DEAN...' moments (sadly not entirely stamped out in later seasons. 'Dude. I'll admit we've gone pretty ghetto with spellwork before, but this takes the cake. I mean, a SpongeBob placemat instead of an altar cloth?', while amusing, sounded so unnatural. Why not '...Dean, is there any particular reason we needed a SpongeBob placemat?' 'Well, did you see any altar cloths in there?' '...okay, I'll admit we've gone pretty ghetto with spellwork before, but this takes the cake'?
The 'as you know' moment that frustrates me most is probably when Sam visits Dr Ellicott in 'Asylum'. 'Thanks again for seeing me last minute.' ALL YOU HAD TO DO TO REMOVE THE AWKWARDNESS WAS GET RID OF THE 'AGAIN', WRITERS. ALL YOU HAD TO DO).
Ahem. Anyway! The relationship between the brothers is always there and it's always wonderful, even when it's not as central to the show as it becomes in later seasons. It's quite a shock, going back and seeing how relatively healthy Sam's perception of his relationship with Dean is in the early days of their travelling together. And the contrast there helps you realise exactly how insane and codependent and quite possibly world-destroying that relationship later becomes. (Dean's perception of his relationship with the rest of his family, of course, has never been healthy.)
Oh, I love the Winchesters so much. They are so messed up.
Also, in the first season, Dean gives most of the exposition about the monster of the week, which makes sense, as he has more hunting experience than Sam. What happened to that?
