I've finally watched the television adaptation of The Last of Us!

As someone who's played the original game multiple times, it's sort of fascinating to watch this adaptation. I've seen television series that were inspired by videogames before - I'm thinking here of Pokémon and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog - but in those cases the games were story-light and the television series very much did its own thing. This is the first time I've seen a direct screen adaptation of a videogame's story, and it's very interesting to see what was added or changed.

Given my familiarity with the game, I kept expecting way more fight sequences! It's a struggle to remember that this is a show, and it's (very sensibly) going to limit fight scenes to what's necessary for the story and atmosphere, rather than throwing them in frequently to challenge the player.

Joel and Ellie are both very well cast. Pascal both looks and feels very like the game's Joel. Facially, Ramsey and Ellie look very different, but Ramsey's styling and performance - their vocal performance in particular - help the character to feel like the Ellie from the game.

More thoughts on the adaptation of The Last of Us, with spoilers (nothing beyond the show). )

It's interesting to see the videogame's setting in live action! At points, the television sets evoke the game so closely that I've found myself thinking the show must have been filmed in the same place, and then I've had to remind myself that the game, uh, wasn't filmed. You cannot put the actors inside the world of your game to film the adaptation. That world exists on a small disc, and the actors will not fit in it.
