rionaleonhart: death note: light contemplates picking up this mysterious notebook. i'm sure it'll be fine. (here at the crossroads)
When 2020 was looming, I posted an entry about the media that had made a real impact on me in the 2010s. I had fun with this, but it's hard to narrow things down across an entire decade! Maybe I should start doing these media roundups more frequently? Every half-decade, perhaps?

Oh, hey, it's 2025.

In alphabetical order, here are ten canons from the last five years that I think I'm going to remember! Note that this is media I originally experienced between 2020 and 2024, rather than necessarily being media that was originally released in that period.

1. Celeste. One of my absolute favourite games. Great music, charming characters, satisfying gameplay. It's tough, but I rarely found it frustrating, and I was delighted to realise how much I'd improved when I went back to replay from the beginning. Playing Celeste is a lot like playing the piano, learning the right pattern and timing of button presses through repetition until you can run smoothly through a level. I'll often find myself replaying Celeste levels when I've got a little time and nothing else is grabbing me, in the same way I'll often take a moment to sit at the piano and play a few pieces I know by heart.

2. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. The relationship between these siblings is just so awful and intimate and fascinating; I can't get enough of it. I want to swim around in all this hideous codependency. When I first drafted this list at the start of the year, I noted, There's a chance I'm being too hasty with this one; I discovered it right before 2024 ended, so I haven't had time to be sure it's going to be a lasting interest. But, having had my mind obliterated by the latest chapter, I can now say with confidence that I am never going to stop thinking about this horrible game.

3. Lost. What an experience! I love it when characters are stranded together and forced to bond under high pressure, and this is an absolutely stellar example. Went in some wild directions, too; I said 'what the fuck' so many times while watching this show. Jack Shephard is a wreck of a man in a way that I find fascinating.

4. Omori. This game fucked me up. A lot of it is fun and charming! And then there are the parts that severely messed with my head. Two separate aspects gave me trouble sleeping. Some really interesting uses of gameplay, including one of the best-executed plot reveals I've ever seen.

5. Person of Interest. In a lot of case-of-the-week shows, the case itself is the least interesting part for me. In Person of Interest, I found the individual weekly cases absolutely gripping. The fact that the murders they're investigating haven't happened yet gives each case a living main character, usually the would-be victim, which makes them so much more fun to watch. I really enjoy Reese as a character, too.

6. Persona 5. I picked up Persona 5 in lockdown, when it was heavily discounted. I'd heard good things about the Persona series, but I'd always been intimidated by how long and complicated the games sounded. Still, it was 2020, and I wasn't able to leave the house, so it seemed like the right time for a hundred-hour RPG. It was an incredible decision. What a stylish, fun game! What great kids! I played it non-stop for a month and a half and had an absolute blast.

7. Persona 4. I was a little concerned about going back to Persona 4 after playing 5. I'd loved Persona 5 so much; what if the previous game was a disappointment? But I ended up loving Persona 4 just as passionately, largely because of Yosuke; he's a good-hearted but slightly shitty disaster of a teenage boy who's helplessly in love with the protagonist, and I find him endlessly endearing.

8. Severance. I've always been compelled by stories about weird things happening to people's memories, and by stories about people developing intense relationships while isolated together, so Severance is essentially the perfect canon for me. By a long way, it's the most gripping show I've ever watched. I'm so nervous when I sit down for a new episode; I never know what to expect!

9. Taskmaster. What a show. It makes me laugh like nothing else. The way it keeps a single set of contestants for each series adds a lot to the experience; you really get to know the contestants and their approaches to these ridiculous tasks over the course of a series. The New Zealand and Australian versions are just as great to watch; Greg Davies remains an unparalleled Taskmaster, but, if I'm honest, Paul Williams is my favourite assistant.

Wait, that's only nine! Okay, I'm going to add a tenth, but this is definitely cheating:

10. Death Note. I absolutely did not first experience Death Note between 2020 and 2024; I've enjoyed it since 2008! But I feel it sort of fits in my 'canons of the last five years' post because I got back into it in 2023 in a way I'd never been into it before. I watched the stage musical, absolutely lost my mind and spent months thinking about nothing but Light Yagami. Let's say the tenth canon here is Death Note: The Musical.

Honourable mention to The Quarry for the burst of intense ficwriting it inspired in me! I wasn't that drawn in by the canon itself, but the potential in Travis and Laura's relationship really grabbed me by the throat.

EDIT: WAIT, I just thought of a legitimate number ten!

10-2: Die Hard. We were locked down for Christmas in 2020, and I was sorry that I couldn't visit my family, but the upside was that I joined in my housemates' Christmas tradition of watching Die Hard. This film was such a delightful surprise for me! I went in expecting a badass, stoic action hero; I got a desperate, terrified mess. I found John McClane's suffering so compelling. What a blast.
rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: sora, riku and kairi having a friendly chat. (and they returned home)
[personal profile] necrophilia was visiting the UK, so we met up yesterday for a day out in London! Wandered around the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum, looked at some cool rocks (there was a gemstone exhibit that made it very hard not to contemplate a museum heist), talked about Oxenfree and Ace Attorney and Severance and Ben Starr, ate some delicious pasta, tried to navigate a marathon that was directly in our path, had ice cream by the river. I had a great time!

My favourite moment: Jes paused briefly among the crowds on the South Bank. She was standing under the London Eye, the London Dungeon on her left side, Big Ben visible across the Thames to her right. She asked me whether this was a touristy area. You know, I think it might just be.

At one point I dragged Jes into a shop full of anime figurines and the like, so I could see whether they had anything featuring Light Yagami. They had figurines of Misa, L and Rem, but there was no sign of Light.

A shop assistant approached and asked whether we were looking for any franchise in particular. I asked whether they had anything else for Death Note.

'No,' he said, 'but we have Joker over here, if you're interested,' and he pointed me to a figurine of Persona 5's protagonist.

For an absolutely bewildered instant, I had no idea how this stranger could know that I'm a Persona fan.

And then I remembered that, for ease of meeting up, I'd dressed in such a way that Jes would be able to see me and go 'yeah, there's no way that's not Riona.' I was wearing a Persona 5 hoodie open over my Final Fantasy XV T-shirt and Final Fantasy VIII Griever necklace. I felt like an absolute parody of myself, standing there in a nerd shop while dressed like the huge nerd I am.

As we left the shop, BABYMETAL's 'Megitsune' started playing, and the final indignity was the fact that I recognised it.
rionaleonhart: death note: light contemplates picking up this mysterious notebook. i'm sure it'll be fine. (here at the crossroads)
I've finished the first season of Dexter!

I love the way Dexter just lights up when Doakes makes their fight physical. Violence! He gets to do violence! He loves violence!

I think Dexter would be confused by Kira. I think he'd struggle to understand why, if you wanted to kill a lot of people, you'd do it in such a detached way, rather than doing it up close. If you gave Dexter the Death Note, he'd never use it.

Light would kill Dexter, given the opportunity. Would Dexter kill Light? Maybe not. Dexter feels a connection to those who kill people who 'deserve it'. Light feels nothing but contempt for murderers, even if those murderers play by his rules. To Dexter, Light might be a kind of kindred spirit; to Light, Dexter is either a tool or a threat.

Spoilers for the first-season finale of Dexter. )

This is a very stupid show. I'm really enjoying it. Like Lost, which I finally fell headlong into a couple of years ago, Dexter is a show that I've thought 'this seems like it would probably be my thing?' about for ages; I'm glad I'm finally getting around to confirming that, approximately two decades later!
rionaleonhart: death note: light contemplates picking up this mysterious notebook. i'm sure it'll be fine. (here at the crossroads)
Years ago, I watched the first episode of Dexter, because it seemed like it could potentially be a fun show about murder. I didn't find it that memorable, though, and I didn't carry on with it.

Actually, that's not entirely true; I found one part of it very memorable. Early in the first episode of Dexter, there's a sequence where Dexter brings a box of doughnuts into work. He smiles and hands out doughnuts to his colleagues, internally monologuing the entire time about how broken and emotionless he is, and about how he fakes his way through every interaction.

After handing out the last doughnut, he looks into the box. There's a dramatic close-up on the bottom of his box of no doughnuts as he thinks, Just like me. Empty inside.

I absolutely lost it laughing. I laughed for about five minutes straight. No sitcom has made me laugh half as hard as this moment in ostensibly serious serial killer drama Dexter.

Recently, I saw Dexter listed on Netflix and thought I might give it another shot. It does sound like my sort of thing on paper, after all.

I gave the first episode another crack. (I still laughed at Dexter's box of no doughnuts.) However, I ran into a new problem I hadn't anticipated: presented with a show about a killer who kills killers, I found myself frustrated that the protagonist was not my beloved Light Yagami. I abandoned the episode partway through and concluded that Dexter was not for me.

A couple of weeks later, [personal profile] wolfy_writing started posting about the show, and... yeah, okay, it did sound sort of fun. In particular, Wolfy's posts reassured me that Dexter is not in fact as emotionless as he claims, which was good news; I can struggle to get invested in emotionless characters. Maybe I'd at least finish the first episode.

I've now seen the first three episodes of Dexter, and I'm having a good time so far! It's a little graphic for my tastes, but not unwatchably so. I'm not passionate about this show (yet?), but I'm definitely planning to keep watching for now.

Dexter inconsiderately continues not to be Light Yagami, though.

You know, Dexter, I'm not sure 'you are a Murder Child and you're inevitably going to murder a lot of people, we just have to accept that' is the stellar parenting you think it was.

Dexter certainly likes to think 'boy, if I could have feelings I'd probably be having this specific feeling right now; good thing I definitely don't have any feelings!' a lot.

Perhaps my favourite aspect of the show so far: Dexter tells us that he has no interest in sex and doesn't understand it, but then he thinks about how a corpse was beautifully drained of blood and it makes him really horny.

My other favourite aspect of the show so far is Dexter fucking up his murder attempt and nearly getting eaten by an alligator.

Here are some thoughts on the latest episode of Severance, 'Attila'!

Notes on Severance episode 2.06. )

I'm glad the fandom seems to have warmed up to the Mark/Helly pairing! 'You're trapped together; you fall in love; would you have fallen in love under normal circumstances, or are you just drawn together because there's nobody else in your lives?' is one of my favourite relationship dynamics, so I was doomed to love them from the start, but I felt all I saw was negativity in the first season; it was hard to me to find any positive discussion of them.

The more batshit and convoluted Mark and Helly's dynamic becomes, the more I see this pairing winning people over. I'm hugely enjoying this insane relationship that is actually three or four distinct insane relationships in a trenchcoat.

In researching my latest Severance fic, I stumbled across a character detail in 'Woe's Hollow' that I am absolutely obsessed with.

Spoilers for Severance episode 2.04, 'Woe's Hollow'. )

I don't have anything relevant to conclude this post with, so I'm just going to link to this post about [personal profile] aestivalis's incredible Malcolm in the Middle/Death Note crossover dream, because I love it and I want to keep it somewhere I can easily look back at.
rionaleonhart: death note: light's kind of embarrassed that he poured all that fake sincerity into an obviously doomed ploy. (guess not)
I've slowed down a little on writing these, but I'm up to twenty fills for the 2025 [community profile] threesentenceficathon! I'm still having such a blast with this event. You can find the current prompting post here.

Death Note, Light, 470 words, prompt: antagonist time travels back to the start. )

Death Note, L/Light, 290 words, prompt: 'Night by night, I let you eat me alive.' )

Ace Attorney, Apollo/Athena and Apollo/Clay, 540 words, prompt: Clay's spirit gives dating advice. )

And, finally, a Severance ficlet! It's set in the first season and has no spoilers for the second, but please be aware that it contains, uh, severe and malicious misuse of tampons.

Severance, Helly, 260 words, prompt: within you. )

I was so thrilled to see a prompt for Apollo/Athena specifically! It's my favourite Ace Attorney pairing, and it's a relatively small ship within the fandom, so seeing that really took me by surprise.

Before I get into the traditional talking too much about karaoke, I should mention that the annual Three-Sentence Ficathon is underway! Here's the current post, if you want to prompt or write anything.

Here is a very belated post about our karaoke-focused New Year's celebrations! Part of the reason this post was taking so long was because it's a pain to link to all the songs on YouTube, so I eventually abandoned the effort; I apologise for how spotty the linking is as a consequence.

It will surprise no one to learn that our household celebrated the turn of the year with karaoke on New Year's Eve. Here are the songs I performed!

- The Glee version of 'Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah', because New Year's Eve coincided with the seventh night of Hanukkah. A carefully calculated song choice; it's a Hanukkah song, so it was a way of saying 'happy Hanukkah!' to Rei, but it's a Glee song, so it was also a way of saying 'I want to affectionately inflict psychological damage upon you.' Rei responded by singing 'How Do You Spell Channukkahh' by the LeeVees.

- 'You and Me (But Mostly Me)', from The Book of Mormon. I modified the lyrics slightly to make this a solo, which frankly I think is in the spirit of the song. There was a lot of laughter at this one, and my housemates broke into applause at the end. 'Yes!' I declared, opening my arms to the sky. 'I deserve this!'

- At Rei's suggestion, the two of us duetted on 'Guy Love' from the Scrubs musical episode. Tem had not seen Scrubs and probably found the experience slightly puzzling.

- I was concerned that 'Dylan' by Emmy the Great might be too fast, but it turned out to be really fun to sing! This is a song I picked up from my time living with [archiveofourown.org profile] th_esaurus; she used to listen to it a lot.

- 'Last Surprise -Scramble-' from Persona 5 Strikers was also fast and fun! Everyone joined in on the too many 'oooooh's at the end.

- Rise Against songs are always both extremely intimidating and an absolute blast to sing, and 'Help Is On the Way' is no exception. I struggled with the 'RIGHT HERE' screams but had an earnest crack at them.

- Singing Gackt's 'Last Song' with Rei was a very nostalgic experience. I was nervous about singing in Japanese, but I think it went okay. It's amazing how the songs you listened to as a teenager stick with you, even if they're in a language you don't speak.

- Tem and I like to wait until everyone's let their guard down and then throw a duet from Death Note: The Musical into proceedings. On this occasion, the duet in question was 'The Way It Ends', so I got to play smug Light, one of my favourite Light Yagami modes (all of Light's modes are my favourite Light modes).

- I ran out of songs I was confident in, so I had to venture into my 'this is probably a bad idea' picks, which is how I ended up singing 'Big Enough' by Kirin J Callinan. There were incredible reactions from the room when the screaming cowboy kicked in. The fun thing about doing this song for karaoke is that, although it's a meme, only a very specific part of it is well known, so the audience may not suspect you're singing a meme song until you throw your head back and go AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH.

- Rei joined me for RichaadEB's metal cover of Touhou's 'Bad Apple', which is fortunate, because I don't think I would have been capable alone! That song really doesn't give you any breathing room.

- I enjoyed singing 'Body' by Marah! I'm always surprised by the vanishingly low viewcount on Marah's songs on YouTube; for a long time I struggled to find their songs on there at all. My brother listened to them a lot when we were teenagers, and I always assumed they were well known, but apparently not; he'd just got into an incredibly niche band, and landed me with a fondness for their songs as a consequence!

And a few others I don't have much commentary on: 'Burning in the Skies' by Linkin Park, 'This Old Sin' by Koethe, a repeat of the sea shanty version of 'Rockstar' by Nickelback.

My favourite performances by Rei included 'Don't Be a Lawyer' from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the unfortunately named 'JAP' by the perplexingly named abingdon boys school, 'Fight Club' by Fitzy, and a couple of Tom Lehrer songs: 'Smut' (with relish) and 'The Masochism Tango' (Rei and Tem briefly tangoed together during this one, although fortunately they didn't follow the song's instructions to the letter).

Rei also performed 'Mother Mary' by Tom Auton, and the lyrics made me suspicious. 'Is this on your Billcifer playlist?' I asked, and Rei hastily shushed me. (Billcifer is Rei's Lucifer-inspired Bill/Dipper Gravity Falls AU; it's here, and I can strongly recommend it if that sounds like your thing! It's been great to see Rei's enthusiasm for working on it.)

My favourite of Tem's performances included 'Gettin' Bi' from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, 'Hurricane' from Death Note: The Musical (always a delight; Tem always puts such passion into 'I AM THE GOD OF A BRAVE NEW WORLD'), 'Godless, Lawless & Non-Monogamous' by New Here, and 'Monochrome' by BABYMETAL (with me and Ginger singing backup vocals).

I'm noting my favourite performances down in part so I can look up the original songs at some point, for those I wasn't familiar with already. One of the fun aspects of karaoke is getting to discover cool new music! However, there's always the risk that I'll seek out the original and go '...actually, I prefer this song when my friends are singing it.'

Rei, Tem and I did a couple of songs as a trio towards the end: 'Wait for It' from Hamilton and 'Six Feet' by Patent Pending. I was afraid that the Hamilton song would be too ambitious, but I think it worked out!

Tem and Rei did a magnificent duet of Sarah and the Safe Word's 'Something Is Afoot on Old Man McGrady's River', and wrapped up with the occasion-appropriate 'This Year' by the Mountain Goats. A great way to see 2024 out!
rionaleonhart: final fantasy vii remake: aerith looks up, with a smile. (looking ahead)
I've seen a couple of you posting ways to reflect on the year that looked fun, and I'm going to steal them for this post!

Firstly, [personal profile] doreyg posted this entry about favourite characters from the year, both new discoveries and returning champions.

I'm going to do something similar; I'm going to take a quick look at the longstanding favourites who've particularly occupied my mind this year, and then I'm going to comb through my 'first impressions' tag and give my favourite character from each canon I first posted about in 2024. (If no favourite character comes to mind, I'll skip the canon.)

My favourite characters of 2024. )

My favourites are disproportionately male, I note, but my favourites are also disproportionately the main character, so perhaps the issue here is that the main character is disproportionately male. I'm pretty easily won over; I often just end up liking the character I spend the most time getting to know!

And that's the end of the character rambling, but APPARENTLY I STILL HAVE MORE TO SAY.

[personal profile] walgesang posted an entry on the three canons that had the largest impact on him in 2024. Here are the three that had the largest impact on me!

Our household gave Severance a try back at the start of the year, and it's one of the most compelling shows I've ever watched. We were all silently riveted to the screen. The concept - what if, when you're at work, you can't remember anything of your life outside the office? - is fascinating, and it's executed so well. The second season is expected to come out early in 2025; I'm looking forward to it!

Omori was a real rollercoaster of a game! Sometimes it's charming and whimsical; sometimes it's unsettling; sometimes it fucked me up so badly I had trouble sleeping. It's hard to think of another canon that haunts me in quite the same way. I finished it in May and haven't stopped thinking about it since.

The Coffin of Andy and Leyley captivated me when I played it in November. It didn't have quite the same 'wow, this is really cleverly executed' factor as Severance and Omori; it just went 'hey, I know what you want' and dropped a catastrophically fucked-up sibling relationship into my lap. And, yes, it turns out that this is exactly what I want.

Honourable mention to Metaphor: ReFantazio: I loved the hell out of it, but I don't think I can say it really impacted me. I had a great time while I was playing it, but I don't expect it to linger with me in the way these three canons do.

There are six minutes of the year left, so I suspect this is going to be my last post of 2024. Happy new year! I look forward to discovering what fictional characters I'm going to be weird about in 2025.
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
Titles are something I've always struggled with when writing fanfiction. I thought I'd take a look back at the fics I've posted this year and note down exactly why I chose the titles I did.

What I'm hoping is that, if I force myself to think consciously about why I choose story titles, the process might become a little easier in future. And, hey, even if it doesn't help, it might be an interesting exercise.

In reverse chronological order, my fic titles for this year:

Rambling about why I chose fic titles. )

I've kept an eye out for patterns during this title analysis exercise, and what I've deduced is that I like ironic titles and titles with dual meanings or dual relevance. And, er, absolute copout titles where I just grab the first half-relevant word I can think of.
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
It's time for the end-of-year fic meme! Once again, I've become impatient and filled out this meme right at the start of December. I'll feel like a fool if I write anything else before the year is over.

Number of fics written in 2024: twenty-six. You can find them on my AO3 account: [archiveofourown.org profile] Riona. (EDIT: Wild Lands and Two Become One bring this up to twenty-eight!)

Fandoms: Severance, Erased, Scrubs, In Stars and Time, If We Were Villains, Danganronpa, Danganronpa 2, Death Note, Ace Attorney, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Omori, The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, Life Is Strange 2, and assorted Final Fantasy games: VII, VIII, XIII, XV and XVI. (EDIT: And Divilethion and Better Half!) Thirteen (EDIT: now fifteen) videogame fandoms, two television fandoms, two anime/manga fandoms, one book fandom. A roughly even balance of new fandoms and ones I've written for before.

Two crossovers: Always Believe (Ace Attorney/Death Note), in which Phoenix Wright defends Light Yagami in court, and Crossroads and Crosshairs (Life Is Strange 2/The Coffin of Andy and Leyley), in which Sean runs into Andrew and Ashley and ends up in a great deal of trouble.

[personal profile] doreyg tagged me to answer these questions about fanfiction on Tumblr, and I thought I'd post my responses here as well! As I originally wrote this for a Tumblr audience, I'll probably end up reiterating some things I've already said on here.

How many works do you have on ao3?

On my main account, Riona, it’s 234. I also have 130 works across two pseuds on my secondary account, rionaleonhart (for older works and ficlets), so in total I’ve posted 364 works to AO3.

What’s your total word count?

My combined total on AO3 is 1,136,030 words. If I look at the documents in which I keep all my writing archived, it’s slightly higher - 1,266,834 words - because I haven’t posted everything I’ve ever written to AO3.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

My most popular fic, by a long way, is And Again (Danganronpa, Naegi is caught in a time loop, 7,227 kudos). This was the first fic I ever posted to AO3, and I was startled by the way it blew up! For a while I was slightly intimidated to post anything else in case I let everyone down.

The others in the top five: Life Imitates (FFXV, Noctis/Prompto, 5,566 kudos), Vessels (Deltarune, 2,635 kudos), Visitors (Assassin’s Creed/Sense8, 1,607 kudos) and Memory Error (Doki Doki Literature Club!, 1,551 kudos). Most of these were an accident of timing: I happened to post just when the fandom was starting to get big. The exception is Visitors, which mainly picked up readers because it ended up expanding into a vast cowritten series.

Interesting to note that four of my top five fics are gen; I wasn’t expecting that!

More talking about fanfiction. )

I've really slowed down on writing crossovers, thinking about it. I should send someone to Silent Hill at some point; it's been years!
rionaleonhart: final fantasy xiii: lightning pays intense attention to you. (speak carefully)
In retrospect, my entry into the Metaphor: ReFantazio fandom may have been slightly disconcerting. I started out with two cute fics about the most popular pairing, so it's possible people were expecting my third offering to be another cute protagonist/Strohl fic, rather than 'all the party members have to bang in order to give each other superpowers'.

People who don't know me already, I mean. I don't imagine the unromantic everyone/everyone fic surprised anyone here.

(I got so excited when I thought up an excuse to get everyone to sleep together! I originally considered 'the protagonist has to sleep with everyone who joins the party', but then I realised that 'each party member has to sleep with the next person to join' had more potential for a fun variety of dynamics; it means nobody really has a chance to get used to it, and some of them are going to feel a lot more awkward about the prospect than others.)

Now that I think about it, I write about characters having unromantic sex pretty frequently! This year alone, I've written multiple fics about characters having sex for non-romantic reasons. Hold on; I'm going to tally these up. (None of these are very explicit.)

- Power Exchange (Metaphor: ReFantazio, everyone/everyone, having sex to transfer magical powers)
- New Experiences (Death Note, Light/Ryuk, having sex to prove you can)
- Above It All (Danganronpa, Togami/Kirigiri, having sex in an effort to gain the upper hand)
- Closing the Circle (If We Were Villains, Oliver/everyone, having sex with other people to distract yourself from the person you're in love with)
- One Lucky Resident (Scrubs, Cox/Elliot, having sex to get the idea out of your system)
- The Fourth Temper (Severance, Mark/Helly, having anonymous sex as part of a workplace ritual, NB consent issues)

Six??? Six fics about characters having sex for non-romantic reasons this year? Oh, wow, I write about this a lot more than I'd realised.

It might actually be seven. I'm not sure whether to count Regrets (Final Fantasy XVI, Clive/Joshua, NB incest); Joshua is genuinely attracted to Clive, but Clive only acquiesces out of a sense of obligation to him.

It's a fun concept, in any case! When two characters aren't actually attracted to each other, they're unlikely to end up in bed together organically, which is always an interesting challenge to overcome. I enjoy writing about characters having awkward and tense interactions, and forcing them to have an 'uhhhh, hey, I know this prospect probably hasn't crossed your mind, but we should have sex' conversation is a great source of those. I'd say 'I should write this sort of thing more often', but it turns out I already write this sort of thing a lot.
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
Here are a handful of ficlets I’ve written recently, in response to prompts on Tumblr! Fandoms: Taskmaster, Death Note, Final Fantasy VIII, The Quarry, Omori.

Taskmaster, Alex/Greg, 280 words. )

Death Note, L/Light/Ryuk, 150 words. )

Death Note, Light/reader??, 280 words. )

Death Note, Light and L, road trip, 280 words. )

Final Fantasy VIII, Squall/Rinoa/Zell, only one bed, 460 words. )

The Quarry, Travis/Laura, first kiss, 480 words. )

The Quarry, Travis/Laura, post-breakup, 130 words. )

Omori, Sunny/Basil, 270 words. )

I’m glad I’ve kept up my tradition of writing a little bit every day in November; it’s been good to have something to focus on. I haven’t written anything for today yet; I’m going to have to think of something!
rionaleonhart: death note: light's kind of embarrassed that he poured all that fake sincerity into an obviously doomed ploy. (guess not)

We had a home karaoke evening on Saturday!

This karaoke session was very loosely Hallowe'en themed. Sometimes we stuck to the theme; Rei opened with a magnificent rendition of 'Margaret Thatcher, Blood Snatcher' by THWACK!, and Tem's 'Hell Is Forever' from Hazbin Hotel and 'Rest in Peace' from Buffy were great fun. Sometimes we came up with loose excuses; 'What's scarier than capitalism?' Rei asked, before launching into 'Six Feet' by Patent Pending.

My songs, which, I'll be honest, made very little effort to stick to the theme:

- 'Want You Bad' by The Offspring. This is a song I find hilarious, and I always try to do something I won't have to take too seriously first; it takes some of the pressure off!

- 'Empire' by Of Monsters and Men. I was listening to this a couple of days earlier when Tem wandered in and went 'wait, what were those lyrics??' The lyrics in question were 'an empire for you, an empire for two' and not, as Tem had heard, 'I wanna fuck you; you wanna fuck too.'

- 'Feeling Kinda Naughty' from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. In my experience, if you have a karaoke evening, one of the songs will end up stuck in your head for days afterwards. On this occasion, the lingering earworm is 'Feeling Kinda Naughty'. I keep catching myself singing 'I wanna lock you in a basement with soundproof walls and take over your identity,' which, let's be honest, is probably something I should avoid saying too loudly in company. Tem also did a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song, 'You Stupid Bitch', which was quite an event.

- 'The Numbers' by Rise Against. This is, by some distance, the most intense song I have ever attempted at karaoke; I was shaking by the end of it. I'm famously incapable of breaking rules or hurting anyone, but my housemates very considerately did not laugh in my face for singing a song about violent revolution.

- 'My Shiny Teeth and Me' by Chip Skylark, from The Fairly OddParents; I needed something silly to calm myself down after the violent revolution song!

- 'Wonderful' by Everclear. I was not originally planning on this and did not practise in advance, and I startled myself by getting slightly choked up in the chorus! Very embarrassing. It's not even a song applicable to my own childhood; I just got emotional!

- 'Hurricane' from the Death Note musical. It is a joy and a privilege to inhabit my terrible boy Light Yagami. Great fun to slowly build up the intensity until eventually bellowing 'I AM THE GOD OF A BRAVE NEW WORLD.' Tem handed me a notebook to hold throughout the song for greater authenticity.

- 'Falling After Me' by Koethe, with Rei. I'm so pleased I managed to get Rei into Koethe's music through previous karaoke sessions! This was a lot of fun to sing together. We danced enthusiastically in the breaks.

- 'The Emptiness Machine' by Linkin Park, also with Rei. I'm thrilled that Linkin Park are making music again! I took Shinoda's part and left Armstrong's part to Rei; I am not confident in my metal screaming skills.

- 'Ghosts' by Mike Shinoda. Well, I had to do something appropriate for Hallowe'en. There are videos with lyrics out there, which might have been more useful for karaoke, but I was compelled to play the original music video because it's so cute.

- 'Secrets and Lies' from the Death Note musical. Tem attempted to sit like L at the start of this and fell off the sofa, which, in retrospect, we should probably have foreseen. Why does L sit like that?? It's not stable!

- The Jenn Fiorentino cover of 'Voices Off Camera' by Rise Against. People were really nice about my attempt at this one!

- 'Wolves Without Teeth' by Of Monsters and Men. I wasn't originally planning to do this one - I usually try to avoid doing two songs by the same artist in one karaoke session - but I'm glad I ran out of other ideas and went with this, because I really enjoyed singing it!

A few other notes from the evening:

- Rei's performance of 'Psycho Killer' by Talking Heads was fun; the whole room joined in on the chorus! I'd only heard the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain's cover and was confused by the lack of ukuleles in gaps in the singing.

- J did 'Everywhere I Go' by Hollywood Undead. I enjoyed watching Tem desperately trying not to lose it laughing at the lyric 'I'll beat my meat like I'm a fucking butcher'.

- Tem sang 'Rondo of Nightmare' by BABYMETAL. It's always fun when Tem does BABYMETAL songs and, even if I've never technically listened to them before, I instantly recognise them from hearing them float through the house; Tem and Ginger both listen to them a lot! I also really enjoyed Tem's performance of 'Bubblegum Bitch' by Marina and the Diamonds, even if it might technically not be as appropriate for Hallowe'en.

- J did 'Bring Me to Life' by Evanescence, so the whole room got to belt out 'SAVE ME' in the choruses, which was good fun!

We all did a group performance of 'In the End' by Linkin Park towards the end, and, to be honest, we all sang with such volume and passion that the microphones were completely unnecessary.
