I have just realised what I want to happen in Torchwood. I want Ianto and Gwen to get sick of Jack and run off together. Nobody would be expecting it. The fandom would combust and die. It would be glorious.
It would also be terrible, but that's not too much of a problem for Torchwood, is it?
Actually, I'm being unfair; this year's series of Torchwood has actually been startlingly good. The episodes are frequently entertaining for the right reasons. Characters no longer attempt to convey emotion by bawling their eyes out for half an hour. This year, I've realised what the idea behind Torchwood is: it's an experiment in creating a show that grows and changes entirely in response to fan demand. Obviously this couldn't fully come into effect until the second series; the writers created the first series according to what they thought the fans would want, and then they examined the fan reactions. The fans preferred sarcastic, witty Ianto to an Ianto who was full of angst and woe, so we're seeing far more of sarcastic-and-witty Ianto in the second series; there was a lot of Owen-hatred, so this year Owen is more likeable. It's inconsistent characterisation, certainly, but it is also a rather brilliant idea, and it means that Torchwood has the potential to improve further with every series. You know, assuming the fanbase doesn't become too insane.
(I could, of course, be completely wrong. For all I know, the writers haven't even touched the Internet. But this is what I very strongly suspect to be the case.)
If by any chance you are reading this, Torchwood writers, forget what I said about Ianto and Gwen. Even though it would be hilarious and brilliant. What we need for Series Three is for Ianto and Rhys to leave their fickle partners and get together. Rhys would be lovely and thoughtful, and Ianto, who is used to being ignored and always being the one to make the coffee, would be quietly but powerfully grateful. I would draw little hearts all over the television screen.
