Sometimes, when I use my David Mitchell icon, I hear my comments in Mitchell's voice. I rather enjoy it.
Relatedly: do you enjoy David Mitchell being adorable? (Or adorability in general, if you are not familiar with Mr Mitchell?) Listen from 2.30 to 3.30 on this Unbelievable Truth segment (the link should take you to the 2.30 mark). I had never before realised that it was possible to hear a blush over the radio.
I believe a number of very skilled people are writing Brooker/Mitchell fanfiction at the moment, which delights me. I love this stupid pairing so much. It's got the potential for so many things I adore: witty banter, insecurity, uncertainty, slightly rubbish attempts at romance, genuine affection concealed beneath mockery. I love the idea that Brooker might have a bit of a private romantic streak, and I love the fact that they harbour so much insecurity between them that they'll probably never get anywhere. I love the idea that Brooker is hopelessly smitten and Mitchell is so convinced that nobody could ever really be attracted to him that he'll never realise it. Their hypothetical dynamic is wonderful, and, whilst I sort of wish the fandom weren't the size of a postage stamp, the people who are writing for it are utterly fabulous, so I can't really complain.
Here is the episode of You Have Been Watching on which Mitchell was a panellist, in which Brooker gradually forgets that he has other guests and by the final round it's essentially just Mitchell and Brooker having a wonderfully mocking conversation. Said final round is from about thirty-two minutes in; I'd suggest watching at least from then until the credits. The bit at the very end makes me crack up every time. (The first time you press the 'play' button it just opens an advertisement, which you can close, but the second should play the video.)
And, hey, whilst I'm linking things: if you watch from about 3.30 to 6.00 on this video (link leads to the 3.30 mark), you can see Brooker getting interrogative and shouty about Mitchell's Twitter. I love it so much when they antagonise each other. (Also, I am very impressed by Mitchell's ability to pronounce the '2' in 'Going 2 Peep Show production meeting'. Well, all right, I don't have any evidence that a '2' was intended, but I can hear it.)
Not that in posting these videos I am desperately hoping to drag others into the Brooker/Mitchell fandom or anything. PLEASE LOVE THIS PAIRING AS MUCH AS I DO, EVERYONE.
Here is an exchange between Jonathan Ross and Team Brooker-and-Mitchell on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2009:
Ross: (primarily addressing Mitchell) I can't believe you didn't feel the urge to bust a move to that bangin' tune. I was looking over there, and you didn't move, neither of you; you sat there stolid and unhappy. Stewing in your own middle-aged juices.
Brooker: (in an admonishing tone) He's genuinely scared about that.
All tinhats aside, the fact that Brooker is able to say such a thing about Mitchell makes me think that they must be quite good friends outside television, and that rather warms my heart. (If they're not friends, they should be and they want to be. FRIENDSHIP TINHAT.)
