It's Possible I've Been Given Too Much Power.
I usually don't include 'I can't answer this' options, because they can drown out other responses. I've included them for question three, though, because I'm curious about how many people aren't answering because they don't know the characters versus how many people aren't answering because they don't like the characters. QUIZ TIME! WHO COULD HAVE PLAYED UNTIL DAWN?
The final question is based on a dream I had a while ago, in which it was a meme to make one-page 'fact sheets' about canons. These fact sheets always ended with 'QUIZ TIME!', a simple question in allcaps, and the answer options 'A) A COCONUT B) AN OLD MAN'.
'Who could have played Until Dawn?' was the only question I remembered from the dream, and I felt compelled to bring it to life.

Who's your favourite Final Fantasy protagonist of the main-series games I've played?
This was surprisingly difficult! Squall and Yuna both have immensely satisfying arcs and I love playing their games. I thought, "hm, maybe Vaan—he gets a lot of undeserved bollocking when he's really quite sweet and caring as a person, I should throw him some love." But that's not really how choosing a fave works, I realised! (It was never going to be Cloud because FF7 can eat me.) And then I was like, "...wait. Is Noctis my favourite? OMG IS IT NOCTIS?" And then I picked him. I guess that's that.

Bulbasaurs are pug-shaped. I'm currently eight months into mourning my former boss being fired... Not because I miss her, which I don't, but because I miss the very neurotic and clingy pug she brought to work with her every day. He'd crawl right into my lap and lay down.

Again, super hard to choose between Yuna, Squall, and Ellie. I cheated and chose Yuna so I could use her for the next question. (Light was never an option because I'm an L girl and I still haven't seen Lost. I decided X-Files should be my historic endurance watch of 2024.)

It was so stupidly difficult typing that little ficlet on my iPad. It kept changing "deaky" to "dreamy". I almost considered grabbing my laptop instead. I didn't, but I thought about it.

Noct is a great answer! I'm very fond of him, although (not unlike Squall) he's often an agonising reminder of my own flaws; we share the same 'Ah, a problem! Let's solve this by refusing to think about the problem until it presumably just goes away somehow' approach.
That pug sounds delightful, and I now desperately want a Bulbasaur to crawl into my lap.
Enjoy The X-Files! I should get back to that at some point. I can say with reasonable confidence that, if you did see Lost, you would loathe my beloved Jack.

The fic that won't fit in the poll
Someday they would write stories about Lady Yuna and her guardians. Commander Leonhart would be remembered as a hero who helped bring down Sin. But to Yuna, he was just Squall, a kind man with a rough facade, who refused to let her face the end of the world alone.
(( I have a fic started somewhere of Squall becoming one of Yuna's guardians after time compression. Ought to work on that... ))

Ever since writing my Squall-as-Yuna's-guardian fic a few years ago (which I know you've already read, but here's the link in case any passers-by are curious), I've been hungry to read more of the concept. The two of them could have such a good dynamic! And I love your idea of it being after time compression, so it could be the Squall we know from canon, rather than an AU Squall who grew up in Spira.

I mean, I like a lot of FF protags! But there's no contest for me, it has to be Noctis. My wife and I have *literally* talked about FFXV every day since it was released.

I like Squall and Yuna about the same level, incidentally, and only slightly more than Light, but Squall is more funny to imagine having a pokemon for the next question.

It was a lot harder than expected picking a FF protag fave; Cloud and Squall were the closest contenders due to nostalgia, but Clive did thoroughly charm me by the end of XVI so he was briefly in the running. I ended up going with Cloud but thankfully question three let Squall get the consolation prize spot.
