Hopefully The Links Are Correct, Because I Can't Be Bothered To Double-Check At This Hour.
I've seen a couple of you posting ways to reflect on the year that looked fun, and I'm going to steal them for this post!
Firstly,
doreyg posted this entry about favourite characters from the year, both new discoveries and returning champions.
I'm going to do something similar; I'm going to take a quick look at the longstanding favourites who've particularly occupied my mind this year, and then I'm going to comb through my 'first impressions' tag and give my favourite character from each canon I first posted about in 2024. (If no favourite character comes to mind, I'll skip the canon.)
Firstly, the old favourites I've found myself thinking about a lot again this year!
Squall Leonhart, Final Fantasy VIII. I think about Squall every year, of course; I have a lot of history with him! He's the first fictional character I ever really connected with, when I was an awkward thirteen-year-old who didn't know how to talk to anyone. But he's particularly been on my mind this year because I created a Final Fantasy VIII fansite in March. This game means a lot to me, it's meant a lot to me for over two decades, and it's been a delight to hide my thoughts about it all over my own little replica of Balamb Garden.
My ships for Squall: Squall/Zell, the first ship I ever wrote fanfiction for! I also think Squall/Zell/Rinoa would be adorable and, honestly, could work surprisingly well. Having one partner might be rough for Squall; he doesn't like having that much attention paid to him! If he has two partners, they can help take some of the pressure off by also paying attention to each other.
My 2024 fanworks featuring Squall: Wake Up (Squall/Zell), a loose rewrite of that first shipfic I wrote back when I was thirteen. Thirteen-year-old me had not given much thought to plausibility; trying to make the concept actually work was an interesting challenge!
James Sunderland, Silent Hill 2. I haven't played the Silent Hill 2 remake yet, but its release really brought James back to the forefront of my mind! James Sunderland was a deeply formative character to me, and to this day I'm drawn to characters who struggle with their own perception of reality and make atrocious decisions.
My ships for James: James/Mary is an absolutely devastating pairing I have a lot of intense emotions about.
Light Yagami, Death Note. I fell catastrophically hard back into Death Note upon seeing the musical last year, and I still haven't entirely recovered. What a terrible young man. Just the absolute worst. I'm captivated by everything he does.
My ships for Light: Light/himself is the OTP; nobody else could ever meet his standards. Light/L and Light/Ryuk have interesting potential, but the only truly satisfying sexual experience Light could ever have is jerking off while thinking about how great he is.
My 2024 fanworks featuring Light: Three very different fics! Cold Comfort is about Light and L sharing a bed out of necessity; Always Believe is an Ace Attorney crossover in which Phoenix Wright defends Light in court; New Experiences is about Light having sex with Ryuk to spite the gods. Light/Ryuk isn't a pairing I see much of in the wild; I was surprised and pleased by how well received my Light/Ryuk fic was!
And now the new-to-me characters! Some of these might not technically be from canons I first started in 2024, but I'm counting anything I first posted about in 2024, in order of posting.
Wait a second, a couple of these aren't new-to-me characters at all! But I'm counting anything with the 'first impressions' tag, which means Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth qualify, even if I've already played the previous games.
Bear in mind that I'm just listing my favourite character from each canon, rather than the characters I loved the most overall. There's overlap, of course, but the fact that Jack is my favourite Stranger of Paradise character doesn't mean I love him more than Junah, my second-favourite Metaphor character.
Peter Parker, Spider-Man 2 (PS5). Peter Parker is a character I've always been fond of, and the Peter Parker of Insomniac's Spider-Man games is one of my favourite incarnations. He's an absolute human disaster, as Peter Parker should be, and he strikes such a good balance of quippy and vulnerable.
My ships for Peter: My Peter Parker ships depend on the particular canon. In the case of the Insomniac games, I think Peter, MJ and Harry should have a weird night together and Peter should have a lot of complicated feelings about it afterwards. They're a great trio!
Elliot Nightray, Pandora Hearts. Really struggled between Gilbert and Elliot for this one! I love it when one character is deeply in love with another but doesn't entertain any thoughts of actually starting a romantic relationship with them; they just quietly accept that love as a part of their life. Gilbert is a stellar example, taking his place alongside Riku of Kingdom Hearts and Satoshi of DN Angel! But I also love a shitty angry teenager with a heart of gold, and Elliot is just so resentful and obnoxious. I can't resist that.
My ships for Elliot: I ship Oz with everyone, and Elliot is no exception! I love the way Oz cheerfully decides that Elliot is his friend, regardless of Elliot's feelings on the matter.
Mark S, Severance. I can't resist a self-loathing, isolated, traumatised wreck with memory issues and terrible judgement. Mark S feels calculated to appeal to me, and he does a great job of it. (Wait, if it's his job to appeal to me, does that mean he can't remember his life when he's not trying to appeal to me?)
My ships for Mark: If you isolate characters in weird circumstances together, I'm highly likely to end up shipping them. I like Mark/Helly a lot, and I also love the idea of a Mark/Helly/Dylan/Irving Macrodata Refinement OT4.
My 2024 fanworks featuring Mark: Across the Threshold (Mark/Helly) is about Mark and Helly secretly staying at the office after hours, to get a taste of life when they don't have to work. The Fourth Temper (Mark/Helly) is a weird dubcon fic in which Helly is one of the Tempers at Mark's waffle party. Through the Looking Glass is about Mark S getting the opportunity to meet his out-of-office self.
Aerith Gainsborough, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Cloud is my favourite character in the original Final Fantasy VII, but I think Aerith manages to beat him in the Remake universe! She's so lively and fun, with a mischievous streak that I really enjoy.
My ships for Aerith: I ship Cloud, Aerith, Tifa and Barret in a big pile, but I have a particular soft spot for Cloud/Aerith. I was surprised to realise how hard I shipped them! It didn't really occur to me until I asked myself 'who should I aim to get the date scene in Rebirth with?' and realised that the answer was Aerith, without question.
My 2024 fanworks featuring Aerith: Divisions, a Cloud/Aerith/Tifa/Barret fic.
Boyd Stevens, From. I drifted away from From before I'd finished the first season, but I remember Boyd was the character I found most compelling, particularly in his struggle over whether to actually lock someone in the Get Murdered Box when it became a reality rather than simply a deterrent.
Sunny, Omori. It's rare for a silent protagonist to grab me, but Sunny ended up being one of my favourite characters of the year! Because so much of the game is set inside his head, I feel we end up getting a good understanding of him, even if he never speaks. And, wow, this poor kid is a mess. I find his psychological struggles very compelling.
My ships for Sunny: I nearly omitted this heading because I didn't think I really had any ships for Sunny, but, now that I think about it, I'm intrigued by the potential of Sunny/Omori. Am I supposed to see a canon with two versions of the same character and not want them to kiss? That seems unreasonable.
My 2024 fanworks featuring Sunny: A Helping Hand, about Sunny's struggles with the hallucinatory hands. The hand hallucinations. The... handllucinations? I'm sorry; I'll leave.
Siffrin, In Stars and Time. In trying to work out what appeals to me about Siffrin, I've come to the sudden realisation that they share a lot of qualities with one of my closest friends. They're both nonbinary, they both struggle to ask anyone for support when they're going through a terrible time, they both love their friends fiercely, they both make a lot of atrocious puns. I don't know if that's why I found myself drawn to Siffrin, but, either way, I enjoyed watching his absolute psychological collapse. (To be clear, I'm not such a fan of my friends psychologically collapsing.)
My ships for Siffrin: I go back and forth on whether I read Siffrin as aromantic or whether I read them as having a slight unrequited crush on Mirabelle. I find Isabeau/Siffrin interesting but tend to interpret it as one-sided; playing the game, I didn't really get the impression that Siffrin returns Isabeau's feelings. I can understand why it's popular, though!
My 2024 fanworks featuring Siffrin: Life After Looping, about struggling to adjust when you're no longer in a time loop, and Reciprocation (one-sided Isabeau/Siffrin), about trapping yourself in an unwanted romantic relationship.
Joe Goldberg, YOU. In response to my heartfelt enthusiasm about Light Yagami being the worst, a Reddit user recommended YOU to me. It was a well-judged recommendation; I'm having a great time with this show! I don't love Joe the way I love Light, but there's still something endearing in how awful he is, and it's great fun to watch him doing terrible things while trying to convince himself that this is all totally fine.
Benjamin Sisko, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I love Sisko's insubordinate streak, and how the fact that he's a station commander means it's tricky for him to get away with insubordination, because the people above him are really important; it's an intriguing balance! I love how passionately he cares for his crew and his son, too.
My ships for Sisko: I ship pretty much the whole Deep Space Nine crew in a big poly mess, but I have a particular soft spot for Sisko/Jadzia Dax, because the history between Sisko and Curzon would make it so interestingly disconcerting for them.
Jack Garland, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. I don't love Jack, but he's definitely my favourite character in Stranger of Paradise. I think I would love Jack if the game had more care put into its writing. He's an angry disaster who doesn't know how to deal with his feelings! I love angry disasters who don't know how to deal with their feelings! Please spend more time exploring his character!
My ships for Jack: In the alternate universe where Stranger of Paradise takes the time to flesh out its party, I'd probably ship Jack with all of his travelling companions.
Leon Strohl, Metaphor: ReFantazio. Strohl is clearly in love with me, and I am compelled to love him in return. I developed a fondness for him very quickly. It's hard to articulate exactly why he appealed to me so much; if I laid out all of his traits, he probably wouldn't sound like that interesting a character! But somehow I adore this young noble with a guilt complex and an unshakeable determination to fight by my side.
My ships for Strohl: Strohl/protagonist, naturally! I really enjoy how in love Strohl is.
My 2024 fanworks featuring Strohl: Close Contact is a short fic about Strohl and the protagonist sharing a bath, written to help me develop my understanding of Strohl's character. Shape of the Heart is about Strohl confessing his love to the protagonist. Power Exchange is about everyone banging in order to give each other superpowers; don't ask questions.
Andrew Graves, The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. I really wanted to name both Andrew and Ashley here; they come as a set and refuse to be separated! But, if I have to pick one, I suppose Andrew narrowly takes it. His feelings about Ashley are such a complicated, awful, interesting mess: the way he simultaneously loves her and resents her, he hates that he loves her, he's terrified of the nature of that love. It seems appropriate that, when I try to come up with reasons I like Andrew, they're all about how he relates to Ashley.
My ships for Andrew: I ship Andrew with Ashley, exclusively and passionately. They're so intense about each other! They're so awful! They're awful individually and make each other so much worse, and I love it.
My 2024 fanworks featuring Andrew: No Way Out is about Andrew and Ashley's time trapped in their apartment together. The Person You've Become (Andrew/Ashley) is about Andrew reflecting on how fucked-up he is and, not unrelatedly, having incestuous sex. Crossroads and Crosshairs is a Life Is Strange 2 crossover in which Sean has the misfortune of encountering the Graves siblings and ends up terrified for his life.
Thiu, Better Half. Thiu is a sad, pathetic disaster of a young man in a way that appeals to me. If I have to choose one of the Thius after he splits himself into two people, it's definitely the sadder Thiu!
My ships for Thiu: Thiu/Thiu, obviously!
My 2024 fanworks featuring Thiu: Two Become One (Thiu/Thiu), in which the Thius adjust to sharing a bed.
My favourites are disproportionately male, I note, but my favourites are also disproportionately the main character, so perhaps the issue here is that the main character is disproportionately male. I'm pretty easily won over; I often just end up liking the character I spend the most time getting to know!
And that's the end of the character rambling, but APPARENTLY I STILL HAVE MORE TO SAY.
walgesang posted an entry on the three canons that had the largest impact on him in 2024. Here are the three that had the largest impact on me!
Our household gave Severance a try back at the start of the year, and it's one of the most compelling shows I've ever watched. We were all silently riveted to the screen. The concept - what if, when you're at work, you can't remember anything of your life outside the office? - is fascinating, and it's executed so well. The second season is expected to come out early in 2025; I'm looking forward to it!
Omori was a real rollercoaster of a game! Sometimes it's charming and whimsical; sometimes it's unsettling; sometimes it fucked me up so badly I had trouble sleeping. It's hard to think of another canon that haunts me in quite the same way. I finished it in May and haven't stopped thinking about it since.
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley captivated me when I played it in November. It didn't have quite the same 'wow, this is really cleverly executed' factor as Severance and Omori; it just went 'hey, I know what you want' and dropped a catastrophically fucked-up sibling relationship into my lap. And, yes, it turns out that this is exactly what I want.
Honourable mention to Metaphor: ReFantazio: I loved the hell out of it, but I don't think I can say it really impacted me. I had a great time while I was playing it, but I don't expect it to linger with me in the way these three canons do.
There are six minutes of the year left, so I suspect this is going to be my last post of 2024. Happy new year! I look forward to discovering what fictional characters I'm going to be weird about in 2025.

Love seeing the write-up and the characters new and old that you loved in 2024! I think of the stuff you listed Omori may be most up my alley? We will see as I have such a backlog already. But it is still great to know how much good stuff is still out there waiting for me.
Here's to finding even more fun with fictional characters in 2025 :D

If you do get around to trying Omori out, I hope you... hmm. I was going to say 'I hope you have a good time with it', but it's difficult to describe Omori as 'a good time'. I hope you enjoy it, in any case!
Here's to finding even more fun with fictional characters in 2025 :D
This made me smile! The perfect new year's wish.
Happy New Year!
If we had to pick our new fav from this year, it'd be Kokichi Oma fron NDRV3 (secret whump character + just really fits with the identity horror of the game). The favs we can recall of the top of our head is Kankri Vantas from Homestuck (mainly our headcanon version but also canon did him dirty) & also Sunny from OMORI (the depressed wet cat).
Also we're obessed with our headcanon version of the pre-games (V3), everyday we are sad & heartbroken for the pre-games.
Re: Happy New Year!
My favourite Homestuck character is Karkat (as mentioned in this post, I can never resist a shitty angry teenager with a heart of gold), so our favourites lie in the same star sign there. And, of course, you know that I share your fondness for Sunny! 'Depressed wet cat' is the perfect description.

I've heard great things about Omori and I should really get around to playing it someday as my kid has it on their Steam library.
A really interesting read about your favorite characters (huge Sisko fan here) and I'll try to do something similar for my journal as well. :)

I hope you enjoy Omori, if you do check it out, although that can also be pretty intense at points!
If you do make a similar post, I look forward to reading it!

Thanks for the warning re: Omori! It looks like the type of game to make sure to play in the right kind of mood (or spread it out with some lighter fare) but my interest in piqued!
Thanks so much! I love reading these types of posts and appreciate all the interesting conversation that pops up around them.

Light is SUCH a delightful boy. <33 It's been so much fun discussing him and his numerous terrible actions with you this year.
I am absolutely delighted that you like Sisko so much too. I genuinely don't think the show would work without him, he's just such a strong character with such lovely dynamics with his entire crew (and some interestingly disastrous dynamics with people outside his crew XD). I love himmmmmmmm.

It's been a joy to watch you discover him! I loved reading your in-depth thoughts on every Death Note episode; it was such a fun way to reflect on the canon.
Sisko is such a good character to have at the centre of the show! He really does hold everything together.

I'm glad the FF7 remake really highlighted Aerith's wackiness that the fandom always seemed to want to ignore before. Like yes she's sweet but also she'll hit you with a chair. Let her hit people with a chair!!
I keep thinking about checking out Severance and then I never do. It sounds so interesting and everyone always talks highly of it, idk why I don't just sit and watch it sjdfhksjh

I'm delighted that the remake remembered how fun she is! To be honest, official materials also struggle to remember she's a fairly wacky character, so I wasn't sure I had much faith in the remake to portray her well. I was ecstatic that we got such a great Aerith!
Severance really is a great show! I hope you enjoy it, if you check it out.
