Fanfiction: Alphabet Ficsnippets, M to Z
Here is the second half of the alphabet ficsnippet meme! A reminder of the concept: the first snippet contains one character whose name (first name, surname or nickname) begins with A and one whose name begins with B, the second a B and a C, the third a C and a D and so on until Z and A. In this half I've cheated a bit by reusing characters.

"One of the greatest travellers who ever lived," the Doctor said. "Well. Apart from me, obviously. And it wasn't exactly voluntary travelling, so I'm not sure that counts. Does that count?"
"Odysseus, you said?" Donna asked. "Like, from the Odyssey?"
"You've read the Odyssey?"
"Oi, no need to sound so surprised about it." She smiled. "I've always sort of wanted to speak to him, actually."
"Oh, well, I can introduce you."
He did, which promptly proved to be a mistake when Donna slapped Odysseus across the face.
"What?" the Doctor asked, as Odysseus gaped.
"What do you think you're doing?" Donna demanded.
"Don't go for the sword, Odysseus," the Doctor said, placatingly.
"Your wife's waiting back home! You might be dead for all she knows, and she's still holding off all these suitors, and meanwhile you're out there gallivanting with nymphs and goddesses and all sorts."
"Er, he hasn't actually met Circe yet," the Doctor said, "so..."
"And, by the way, when you actually get home, what's the point in testing the suitors if you're only going to kill them all anyway? What sort of system's that?"
"She's mad," the Doctor said conspiratorially to Odysseus. "Plagued by the gods. Terrible business. Please don't stab her."
Akio Ohtori (Revolutionary Girl Utena)/Perry the Platypus (Phineas and Ferb)
"Hey," Utena said, looking around, "where's Chuchu?"
Chuchu, having discarded his disguise and donned his fedora, was high above the school, facing Akio across a vast arena.
"Perry the Platypus," Akio said. "Did you think I hadn't noticed?"
Perry did not reply, which was unsurprising, as he was physically incapable of speech, being a platypus.
"What will your owners think if they discover that you have been deceiving them?"
Perry was unable to verbally illustrate the hypocrisy in this question, but he could and did give Akio an extremely flat look.
The ensuing swordfight between man and platypus would have been pretty great to watch, so it is a shame that this story is being conveyed in a purely textual format.
Pyramid Head (Silent Hill 2)/Quina Quen (Final Fantasy IX)
The creature advanced slowly, threateningly, the enormous knife it was dragging striking sparks from the floor. It wore a filthy apron, which made Quina wonder if perhaps it was a cook, and it was covered in blood, which made Quina wonder if perhaps there was meat nearby, and in place of a head it had an enormous rusted metal pyramid.
Quina ate it whole.
Quistis Trepe (Final Fantasy VIII)/Ruby (Supernatural)
Something had gone very wrong.
The Garden tells you to ignore any negative things people say about junctioning GFs, Siren's voice said in her mind. But you're a smart girl; you must have wondered whether any of it was true.
Quistis tried to struggle, but she couldn't move; she couldn't speak; she couldn't even blink on her own. She'd retreated to the Junctioning part of her mind and now she couldn't get out.
Do people really lose their memories? How about those reports of people who take on a little too much of their GF's personality; are those real? What if the GF completely takes over? Nobody listens to the people who say that, obviously; that'd be crazy.
Unjunction Siren, Quistis thought, as hard as she could.
Okay, I'll admit maybe I'm coming across as the bad guy here by taking control of your body.

But do you ever consider what it's like to be a GF? We come out, we blast your enemies, you lock us back up until the next battle? Let me tell you, it's not fun.
Would you be prepared to negotiate? Quistis asked, desperately.

Ruby (Supernatural)/James Sunderland (Silent Hill 2)
"I'm not Mary," she says. "I'm just wearing her skin. Sorry to break it to you."
She's exactly like her. Down to the clothes, down to the voice. Her skin looks a little paler than James remembers, but maybe that's just the flashlight. How can she not be Mary?
"I was looking for you," he says.
"What, did you think I was being metaphorical? Let's try again. I'm a demon. I'm possessing your wife's corpse. Better?"
It's difficult to breathe, suddenly. He knew, of course, but - but the letter, but - "Mary's dead?"
She gives him a sceptical look. "You were there."
What? "I wasn't there." He pauses. "Why are you - why her?"
"Call it a morbid sense of humour."
She flicks something into her hand from her sleeve, raises it so it catches what little light there is here. It's a knife. James takes a step backward.
"There's a place saved for you downstairs," she says. "I've come to collect."
Sherlock Holmes (BBC Sherlock)/Tidus (Final Fantasy X)
"The awkward silences; the forced smiles; can you honestly say that you don't know what's going to happen to Yuna?"
Tidus frowned. "Huh? I mean, she's going to beat Sin, right?"
Sherlock pressed his hands over his face with an aggravated growl. "Tell me you at least know why Auron refused to enter the Farplane."
"I don't know, he was scared or something." A pause. "Hey, are you feeling okay?"
"John," Sherlock muttered into his palms, "please find a way here before I lose all my considerable faculties."
Toph Bei Fong (Avatar: The Last Airbender)/Ursula (The Little Mermaid)
"I could give you sight," the voice whispered from the water. Toph couldn't feel the woman speaking, as she wasn't touching the ground, but she focused on the direction of the sound. "Wouldn't you like to be able to see, little girl? And all you'd have to do in exchange is give me your bending."
Toph considered for a moment.
"I've got a better idea," she said. "Why don't you eat rocks?"
Utena Tenjou (Revolutionary Girl Utena)/Grace Van Pelt (The Mentalist)
"You know," she says, after taking a moment to get her breath back, "you're not supposed to carry a sword without a sheath in public."
The girl grins sheepishly and slides her sword back into its scabbard. "Sorry."
"But thank you," Van Pelt says, getting to her feet. Her legs tremble slightly. "I'm not going to arrest you for saving my life."

The suspect - well, after attacking Van Pelt he's a criminal whether he committed the initial murder or not - is unconscious, rather than dead; Utena, as Van Pelt has discovered her rescuer is called, had the sense not to use the edge of the blade. Van Pelt checks his body, removes the gun he'd trained on her and the switchblade he keeps in his shoe, and then the two of them sit on either side of him and wait for the ambulance to arrive.
"You shouldn't be here," Van Pelt says. "You're a civilian; it could be dangerous if he wakes up." Possibly even a child. "How old are you?"
Utena hesitates. "I don't know."
Van Pelt raises her eyebrows. "You don't know how old you are?"
"I know, it's weird, right? But I really don't know. I feel like I've been asleep for a long time."
"Were you in a coma?"
"No, it's not that." Utena frowns, toying with her long pink hair. "I thought I was fourteen, but I've thought I was fourteen for years. Something... happened to me, and I realised that wasn't normal."
Drugs? "You look older than fourteen," Van Pelt says. "I'd say around eighteen. Don't you have anyone who can tell you how old you are? Family?"
Utena averts her eyes. "I need to go."

Utena is hanging suspended in mid-air, her arms outstretched, and every inch of her body is pierced by swords. Her head is down, and she draws in harsh, rapid breaths through her half-open mouth - but then she raises her head to catch Van Pelt's eyes and grins at her, through the sweat and the tears, although smiling is obviously an effort.
Van Pelt realises that she is dreaming, and she realises that she has had this dream before: as a child in an insignificant farming town, before she decided that she wanted to join the police, she wanted to help people.
Perhaps it means nothing, perhaps she is only retroactively putting Utena's face on the impaled figure, but when she wakes she knows that she needs to find Utena and she needs to save her.
Voldemort (Harry Potter)/John Watson (original Sherlock Holmes stories)
"Have you eliminated the impossible?" I asked Holmes.
"I have," he said, slowly.
"And what remains?"
"Very little." He laced his fingers beneath his chin and considered. "I have known of Moriarty's existence for a long time, but the evidence seems increasingly to point towards his having some sort of magical ability. I know of no man who can travel so quickly from place to place. It is most perturbing."
"But surely you don't believe in magic, Holmes?"
"I do not," he returned, gazing with a troubled countenance through the window-pane, "but, Watson, I fear we have reached a point at which every alternative is equally unlikely."
William Brown (Just William)/Xemnas (Kingdom Hearts II)
"I am creating a brand new world," he said. "One heart at a time."
William was supremely unimpressed.
"Yes, but what does it do?" he asked, gesturing towards the heart-shaped moon. "'S no use makin' it if it doesn't do anything."
"A new age of darkness," Xemnas proclaimed, spreading his arms wide. "A heart for those without hearts."
"There's a racing car in the toy shop," William said, "an' it's got wheels that move, jus' like a real car, an' if you pull it back an' let it go it drives, jus' like a real car. An' there are lots of them, in diff'rent colours. I want a red one," he added, hopefully.
"I have created something astonishing," Xemnas said, looking down upon the boy, "and you are speaking of toys?"
"'S jus' a moon, isn't it? The moon doesn't do much, does it? Don't see why we need two of 'em."
"You would not understand," Xemnas said, turning away to gaze upon his creation. "It is almost complete."
There was a silence. William began, absently, to excavate his ear with a finger, and then an enormous key materialised in his other hand. He regarded it with interest.
Xemnas had turned back upon the sound of the key's appearance. Had he been capable of emotion, he would have been extremely surprised. "You are pure enough of heart to wield the Keyblade?"
"D'you mean it's a sort of sword?" William asked, inspecting it. "So I'm a sort of pirate?"
"Then you must fight the Heartless. You must harvest their hearts."
"Oh, that's awf'ly rich. I mean, that's awf'ly rich, makin' me fight things jus' for your moon thing."
"I shall provide you with the toy car of which you spoke."
William considered.
"All right then," he said.
Xu (Final Fantasy VIII)/Yuna (Final Fantasy X)
"Cadet Yuna," Xu said, wearily, "not that your actions weren't admirable, but you don't seem to have grasped the concept of a mercenary organisation."
"They were fighting for their freedom," Yuna said. "Should they die because they couldn't afford help?"
"Regardless of how you may personally feel about the situation, please stop healing the enemy."
Yuna (Final Fantasy X)/Zell Dincht (Final Fantasy VIII)
"What is she doing?" Lulu asked, watching as Yuna spoke quietly to their new acquisition.
"Think she wants him to be her guardian, ya?"
"Hmmm." Lulu cast an eye towards the young man from Zanarkand. "Is it really... prudent... for her to ask every stranger she meets to accompany us?"
The newcomer punched the air. An "OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!" echoed around them, rivalling the crash of the thunder.
Wakka shrugged. "I like him."

"D'you think maybe it's some weird new kind of Fire-type Pokémon?"
"I am not a Pokémon!"
