rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
About a week ago, I posted an unfinished fanfiction meme to Tumblr, and I thought it might be fun to play here as well!

Name a canon you know I have at some point enjoyed, and I’ll dig up and post an excerpt from the unfinished fanfiction I’ve almost certainly got lying around. (If you name something I don’t have any unfinished fanfiction for, I may write a few lines on the spot. We’ll see!)

I’ve posted this before, many years ago, but don’t worry about avoiding canons that were requested back then; I’ll just try to dig up something else.

Here are the excerpts I posted in response to requests on Tumblr:

[archiveofourown.org profile] Cinder_Quill: For the fanfiction ask meme: any unfinished stories about DN Angel?

This was tricky! But I dug through an old notebook, and I managed to uncover a tiny paragraph. This was from a Kingdom Hearts/DN Angel crossover I have zero recollection of contemplating, in which Kingdom Hearts Riku is talking to Daisuke. Both Riku and Satoshi are self-loathing teenagers who are intensely in love with someone they feel they don’t deserve, and I have a lot of emotions about them.

“Maybe it’s not my place,” Riku says. He glances in Satoshi’s direction. “Or maybe I’m just… projecting or something. I don’t know. But I think you’re important to him.”

[tumblr.com profile] academicgangster: Ace Attorney for the unfinished fanfiction meme?

Here’s a snippet in which Apollo and Athena stay up working too late and end up accidentally falling asleep on each other.

Ace Attorney unfinished snippet: Apollo and Athena. )

[tumblr.com profile] futuresoon: Danganronpa!

I took this to be a request spanning the entire Danganronpa series and dug up a little Danganronpa 2 snippet. Major Danganronpa 2 spoilers under the cut.

Danganronpa 2 unfinished snippet: Hinata and Komaeda. )

[personal profile] wyomingsmustache: Okay so I know it's been well over a decade since you've written anything Top Gear related but I was showing my roommate an episode the other day and telling him stuff about my Top Gear fandom days so now I am curious if you've got any bits and pieces leftover from back when, so for the fanfiction meme, Top Gear? (And if you don't, completely understandable)

We’re really getting into the deep lore here. Here’s something… mildly weird and dark? By Top Gear standards, at least. Because apparently I decided I should write two crossovers between Top Gear and Silent Hill. But Silent Hill is in Wales, for some reason.

(I know the reason. It’s because this was also going to be a crossover with Torchwood. It’s probably for the best that it never got finished.)

Top Gear unfinished snippet: the trio unknowingly approach Silent Hill. )

[personal profile] doreyg: Death Note for the unfinished fanfic meme!

I responded with a Death Note/Silent Hill snippet I’d previously posted on this journal. So it wouldn’t just be material I’d already posted elsewhere, though, I also uncovered a few lines from a notebook (a regular non-death notebook):

In another world, you might have been someone else. Nothing special, but enough. Light Yagami, an ordinary man with an ordinary life.

But this is the world you’re in, and you’ve become a god.

[tumblr.com profile] tweetymcbastardface: Waterloo Road. Do it.

I can’t believe anyone would do this to me.

Waterloo Road unfinished snippet: Tom/Izzie/Lorna. )

And that’s all the unfinished fanfiction requests I received on Tumblr! Feel free to request a fandom in the comments here, and I’ll see if I have anything lying around for it, or, failing that, I’ll see if I can scribble something down.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
When I have a fic idea, I’ll usually scribble it down in the back of my diary. It’s time to switch diaries again, so I’m going to carry on the tradition I started last year!

This post lists all the fic ideas at the back of my 2022-23 diary. If I’ve written the fic, I’ll include a link to it. If I’ve started the fic, I’ll share a snippet. If I haven’t started it, I’ll write at least a hundred words on the spot.

First of all, here are the fics I’ve written in full. Fandoms: The Book of Mormon, Life Is Strange, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Do Revenge, Person of Interest, Lost, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope. There may be spoilers for these canons below the cut.

Written fics from my 2022-23 diary. )

Next, let’s look at the works in progress (or at least the works that were started; I’m not sure they’re actively progressing). Fandoms: The X-Files, Silent Hill, Hypnospace Outlaw, Final Fantasy VIII, Lost, Animorphs. There may be spoilers for these canons below the cut.

In-progress fics from my 2022-23 diary. )

Finally, it’s time for the fic ideas I haven’t touched and now have to write something for. I’m a little intimidated by this category, but let’s see how it goes.

Fandoms: The Book of Mormon, The X-Files, Beacon Pines, Person of Interest, Community, Lost, Scrubs, Silent Hill. There may be spoilers for these canons below the cut.

2022-23 fics I hadn't started... until now. )

I’m glad I started doing this! Most of these will probably never become full fics, but it’s good to at least make a start on these concepts, rather than letting them languish eternally in my old diaries.
rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: riku, blindfolded and smiling slightly. (we'll be the darkness)
We've almost finished season three of The X-Files!

I haven't seen much American television from this era, and I'm struck by the way the shadow of the Vietnam War hangs over The X-Files. In some ways, it's reminiscent of the lingering impact of the Ishbal genocide in Fullmetal Alchemist, although of course the atrocities of the Vietnam War were very real.

I remember being surprised to learn that 'the war' without context is sometimes used to mean the Vietnam War in the US. To me, in the UK, 'he fought in the war' has always meant World War II.

'Pusher': Mulder woke Scully up by stroking her face! They're such weird colleagues. I love it. ('You and your pretty partner seem awfully close,' the murderer they're pursuing observes shortly afterwards.)

I really enjoyed that entire episode, actually! Lots of Mulder and Scully having very intense feelings about each other, and that's very much what I'm here for. Scully slept on his shoulder! Mulder was forced to play Russian roulette with her! They held hands while trying to process their trauma!

When Mulder's in a dangerous situation, we don't see Scully making the decision to go in after him; we just see her going in after him, because of course she does. That was never in question.

Huh! I just looked it up, and apparently the writer of 'Pusher', Vince Gilligan, went on to create Breaking Bad.

'Jose Chung's From Outer Space' was also a hugely enjoyable episode for very different reasons. I loved the different perspectives and Scully censoring all the swearing. And she's so put out to learn someone said she threatened them!

I love the sequence in 'Quagmire' where Mulder and Scully get trapped on a rock in a lake. Asking each other about cannibalism! Mulder aiming his gun at a duck! Strangely reminiscent of the Peep Show episode where Mark and Jeremy get trapped in a building together and have nothing to do but talk to each other.

Scully: You're so consumed by your personal vengeance against life, everything takes on a warped significance to fit your megalomaniacal cosmology.
Mulder: Scully, are you coming on to me?

It's fun to consider Mulder and Scully investigating odd happenings from different canons. Mulder and Scully go to Silent Hill to investigate a series of disappearances? Mulder and Scully try to work out what happened on Rokkenjima? Mulder and Scully go looking for Luz Noceda and find the portal to the Boiling Isles? "Have you heard about the morphogenetic field, Scully?" Mulder asks.

More of The X-Files! We're a few episodes into season three.

'Humbug', the circus sideshow episode, was an episode in which I could very clearly see the DNA of Supernatural in this show. Occasionally Mulder will say a line I could easily imagine coming out of Dean Winchester's mouth, and it's always a little jarring.

'Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose' is also a very Supernatural episode. I can't believe it's canonical that Mulder is going to die by autoerotic asphyxiation. (Also fascinating: Scully asking Bruckman to tell her how she dies and getting the answer 'You don't.')

Of course, the DNA of Supernatural is also apparent in the weird, intense relationship between Mulder and Scully. I really enjoy their strange dynamic.

I'm predictably pleased by Mulder losing his mind in 'Anasazi'. I was somehow really shocked by the revelation that his water supply had been contaminated with LSD; I was expecting an alien-related explanation and wasn't prepared for something that could actually happen! Between that and the rapid ageing episode, I wouldn't be surprised if Mulder never drank water again.

I feel Mulder's been getting his nipples out a lot lately.

Mulder: Imagine if you could come back from the dead and take out five people who caused you to suffer. Who would they be?
Scully: I only get five?
Mulder: I remembered your birthday this year, didn't I, Scully?

It's hilarious that Mulder keeps going 'clearly the only possible explanation is [something completely ludicrous]' and he's always right. As Ginger says, he's lucky that he's in The X-Files; it's easy to envision him as a constantly incorrect character in a different show. (Scully's much less fortunate to be in The X-Files; in any other show, she'd be right.)

I'm trying to work out whether I ship Mulder and Scully. I think the version of their relationship I'm most interested in is probably 'a non-romantic relationship so intense and intimate it seems slightly weird that it isn't romantic'.

Neither Mulder nor Scully seems to have friends, really; there are people who are willing to help them, but there's no one they spend time with socially. Maybe that's part of the reason they're so weird about each other.

Finally, I've just realised I never actually mentioned why I made the decision to watch The X-Files for the first time. I'll be honest: it's because I had Bree Sharp's 'David Duchovny (Why Won’t You Love Me?)' stuck in my head. Turned out to be a pretty good decision!

(Incredible collection of nineties faces in that music video. I'm particularly fascinated by Brad Pitt apparently singing 'David Duchovny, I know you can love me' while in character as Tyler Durden.)
rionaleonhart: the mentalist: lisbon, with time counting down, makes an important call. (it's been an honour)
Perhaps predictably, I went down with COVID two days after my theatre excursion. I suppose I was bound to get it sooner or later; at least I got it doing something fun. I'm fully vaccinated, and it seems like a mild case. If this is the cost of an evening with my perfect Mormon boyfriend Kevin Price, I'll pay it.

I don't know if it's a consequence of COVID, but over the last few nights there have been odd moments that may have been real or may have been dreams, and I can't tell. I think there were a lot of tapping noises under my bed a couple of nights ago, and they suddenly stopped when I turned on my light? But I don't know if that was real.

There was a weird moment last night when I woke up suddenly, convinced my heart had stopped, with my own hands around my throat. Unless I dreamt that?

Basically, I've turned into a character from one of my fics, and I'm perplexed by it.

Here are some more notes on The X-Files! We're partway through season two; I think the last episode we watched was 'Fresh Bones'.

The arsonist episode is trying to persuade me that Mulder has at some point had sex, but I am not fooled.

Mulder and Scully's relationship is extremely weird, and I'm enjoying it a lot. Mulder, if you want to comfort your colleague, you can verbally express your sympathy; you might give her a hug if you're close; you might put a hand on her arm or shoulder; that's all normal and acceptable. You don't tenderly rest a hand against your colleague's cheek.

'Ascension' is a great episode for demonstrating how obsessed and codependent Mulder and Scully's relationship has become. Also, I'm cracking up at this dramatic scene of Mulder speeding in a cable car.

Hugely enjoy Mulder being fucked-up and single-minded and making terrible decisions in the aftermath of Scully's abduction. 'I don't sleep any more.'

For a moment, I really thought Mulder was going to bang Scully's sister while Scully was comatose.

I'm so pleased that the weird intimacy between Mulder and Scully has ramped up after she was abducted. In the episode after her return, 'Firewalker', Mulder touches her so much: his hand on her shoulder, cradling her jaw, stroking her hair.

Reaching across the table to clean food from the corner of her mouth! You're so weird with your colleague, Mulder!

Mulder instantly loses his mind whenever Scully is missing or unsafe, and I love it.

Both Scully and Mulder have a habit of going on long philosophical rambles in the opening of their reports before getting down to business, in a way that makes them sound like they're writing a recipe blog:

But our fear of the everyday, of the lurking stranger and the sound of footfalls on the stairs, the fear of violent death and the primitive impulse to survive, are as frightening as any X-File, as real as the acceptance that it could happen to you.

I've made this lasagne on many occasions.
rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (NOOOOOOOOO)
It's very strange to actually be watching The X-Files, after years of very vague osmosis. I knew that Scully was a sceptic and Mulder was an enthusiastic believer in aliens, but I had not realised how extremely weird Fox Mulder was.

I was also under the impression that there weren't any aliens in The X-Files. I thought that every episode was Mulder going 'aliens!' and Scully going 'obviously it's not aliens' and Scully being correct. Basically, I thought this show was Scooby-Doo. I was watching the first episode and going, 'Huh, there are a lot of odd things going on; I wonder what the mundane explanation is going to be.'

I think I reached this conclusion because I knew that, famously, there was a guy who was convinced there were aliens and a woman who was convinced there weren't. I decided this was only possible if the aliens were disproved in every episode, because, if they found aliens, Scully would presumably go 'oh, I suppose there are aliens', whereas, even if they never found aliens, Mulder would never change his mind.

Instead, Scully narrowly misses seeing every unquestionably paranormal event. It's becoming increasingly hilarious.

I thought Scully was going to be very poised and sensible, so I'm glad that as early as episode two we get to see her absolutely flipping the fuck out, which is a much more reliable way of getting me interested in a character.

We're up to episode eleven, 'Eve'. An exchange I enjoyed:

Scully: Mulder, you're rushing me out of the room.
Mulder: No, I'm not.
Scully: Do you have a girl coming over?
Mulder: What's a girl?

Mulder does come across as remarkably sexless; there are fictional adults who don't seem particularly interested in sex, but there are only a couple - Fox Mulder, Phoenix Wright - who leave me unsure that they actually know what sex is. That said, my housemate and I did have this exchange during episode five, 'Jersey Devil':

Ginger: Is Mulder going to fuck a cryptid?
Riona: God, he would.
Ginger: He absolutely would. But not in a horny way; more in a research way.

I cracked up laughing when Scully stripped off in episode one to show Mulder the mysterious marks on her skin and neither of them acted like this was in any way weird. No hesitation, no embarrassment, no attempt to explain: just immediately disrobing in front of your new colleague, who isn't remotely thrown by this. Forget the murders; that's the evidence that something paranormal is going on here.
