The Tutor Actually Apologised.

An incident from my Jane Austen seminar earlier this week:

Tutor: It's a bit like Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson: the genius detective and the really stupid--
Riona: WATSON IS NOT STUPID.
Entire Class: ...

BENEATH THE CUT: possibly the worst crossover idea I have ever had, presented in image form. Beware of flashing image.

Oops, Bella, I did it again.

I don't know why his clothes are also sparkling. Evidently he is just that sparkly. (And I really don't know why his trousers aren't sparkling if his jacket is. Well, all right, the practical reason is 'the sparkling was starting to hurt my eyes'. Perhaps the trousers are made of extremely dense sparkle-suppressing material.)

To those of you who are not familiar with The X Factor and therefore do not know who these gentlemen are: you are fortunate. Allow me to destroy that fortune with an educational video clip. (WARNING: bad singing. Really, really bad singing. Bad dancing. Bad outfits. These guys are absolutely appalling and bring me so much joy. I laugh uncontrollably every time I watch this clip.)

SO I KNOW WHAT I SHALL NOW BE PICTURING WHENEVER I ENCOUNTER ANYTHING TWILIGHT-RELATED.

Last night, I dreamt that I went to an open-air Supernatural convention on the islands around Sandover Village (Jak and Daxter). Jared and Jensen snogged each other, to amuse the fangirls, and then Jared kissed me (not in front of the fandom, although I remember thinking 'augh, what if someone sees? the fandom will hate me'), presumably to amuse himself. He was very sweet about it. I may now have a bit of a dream-induced crush.

YES DEFEND FICTIONAL CHARACTERS AGAINST BAD ASSUMPTIONS. IT MUST BE DONE.

Also, lol sparkly bad singers. I saw their Ghostbusters routine on Youtube. It was quite something.

I approve of the sticking up for Watson. He's simply a different kind of genius. There are many types, imho.

I couldn't get the whole way through that video. It BURNS MY EYES.

JEDWARD ARE EASILY MY FAVOURITE MAINSTREAM CELEBS EVER

THEY ARE SO FASCINATINGLY DUMB AND TOTALLY ENDEARING AND SHSHJHK

according to the Jedward LJ comm (http://community.livejournal.com/john_and_edward/24652.html) -

What is love?
John: L.O.V.E. [laughs] Love can be different things - it can be a strong bond with somebody or a passionate love.
Edward: It’s when two people just get each other, like if you both like a really cool dog.

YES YES YES THANK YOU! For sticking up for Watson.

Watson's a *doctor* ffs, and a very intelligent man. Also, quite probably based on Conan Doyle himself, who certainly doesn't appear to have rated himself as stupid.

Watson's there to do the Worf effect*. We see Watson being a brilliant and incisive man, and then we see Holmes blow him out of the water intellectually, and we see that Holmes is a total genius as a result. Portraying Watson as stupid isn't only unfair, it MISSES THE WHOLE BLOODY POINT. *ahem*

* TVtropes reference. On Next Gen, you always know when something is intended to be OMGSOTOUGHEEEP! because it will beat up Worf. We know that Worf is an incredibly strong and capable fighter, and very very tough indeed. So when Worf ends up flying across the room, we know to be scared. :-)

Hahah, I love random outbursts like that.
I haven't read much Sherlock Holmes since my childhood, but I was pretty sure that Watson wasn't stupid.... even at the time it seemed to me like Watson was supposed to be smarter than Holmes? I can't really remember, will have to re-read :)

At least your dream induced crush is at least nice. I had a case of that with Hannibal as portrayed by Anthony Hopkins. Severe case of WTF SELF?!

[identity profile] dancesontrains.livejournal.com 2009-12-05 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
&Watson;, he is Quite Excellent. Have you seen this (http://beatonna.livejournal.com/113738.html) already?

Unrelated to anything, but I dreamt that I was to be cast as Peter Petrelli in a Heroes that was not going to become utter rubbish! Perhaps this is a sign I should start being very ~intense~ with my non-existent brother. Hmm.

[identity profile] saaski-moql.livejournal.com 2009-12-05 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I got up to thirteen seconds before I had to stop.

This was made better by your outburst against the Watson myth!

I've never read Sherlock Holmes stories or seen any adaptations of them (well I don't think I have, except that Young Sherlock Holmes film which I'm not sure counts) so I don't know what on earth this idea is based on beyond the odd clip here and there but I've always had the impression Holmes was the super-intelligent one but a bit too coldly logical and a little detached sometimes, whilst Watson was not as clever as Holmes (not stupid, just not as clever) but because of that he was more, well, grounded I suppose. He had a different type of intelligence that complimented Holmes. This may well be wrong of course.
(And for some reason now I seem to think of Derren and Coops this way too)

Thanks to this post I have wasted the day watching Jedward videos and interviews. They're adorable and inept! And now I can actually tell them apart when they're talking. I'm not sure I wanted to be able to do that.

(also, your picture is wrong - Edward is always the one gazing lovingly at his brother.)

I'm liking this J&D and SPN crossover. 8D Especially the Jared/you part, because celebrity/people I know is awesome. And the Jared/Jensen part. And the idea that somewhere Samos is shaking his head in disgust at what's going on.
