rionaleonhart: final fantasy xiii: lightning pays intense attention to you. (speak carefully)
Idle musing: I wonder what would happen if the cast of one Final Fantasy game happened to be dropped into the plotline of another?

The cast of Final Fantasy VIII in the plot of Final Fantasy XIII: Squall's a bit less angry than Lightning, so there's probably less punching, but otherwise I imagine it would be extremely similar. Rinoa takes Snow's place as the idealist who keeps everyone going; she's not particularly Snowish personality-wise (Snow is probably what would result if Seifer, Zell and Rinoa all tried to raise a kid together - well, Snow and explosions), but I can see the characters fulfilling the same role. Gradually, Squall comes to care about the people with whom he has found himself stuck. I would actually be really interested in reading a fic along these lines.

(I would also probably read the fic in which Seifer, Zell and Rinoa try to raise a kid. It would go so badly.)

The cast of Final Fantasy XIII in the plot of Final Fantasy X: Lightning is a Summoner! SCREW YOU GUYS; SHE DOESN'T NEED GUARDIANS. This causes complications when she eventually tries to obtain the Final Aeon.

...and around here my musing came to an end, because I realised that too many Final Fantasy plots are basically incoherent for this to be a successful line of thought.

The Final Fantasy XIII concept - a group of people find themselves thrown together and ostracised by the world, with a time limit set on their lives and little idea of what to do to save themselves - is generally quite an interesting one to plug various characters into, though. Someone should probably write about the cast of The Mentalist or Glee or Friendship is Magic becoming l'Cie.

(Here, from one of my notebooks, are some scribbled-down thoughts on treasures Nathan and Elena could find in potential Uncharted fic:

- morphing cube from Animorphs (Escafil Device?)
- Pokéball
- MAYBE SOMETHING THAT WON'T NECESSITATE A BIG DAFT CROSSOVER
- or maybe something that will necessitate a big daft crossover and is specifically a fal'Cie. What an incredible statue! Wait, is - is it alive? AND THEN THEY BECOME L'CIE. WOW, THERE WOULD BE NO MARKET FOR THIS AT ALL.
)

The problem with using Final Fantasy XIII as a basis for concept crossovers (I don't know whether that's what they're called: what I mean is a work of fanfiction that uses only characters from Fandom A and simply borrows a concept from Fandom B, so it's essentially a Fandom A fic that happens to use an idea from another fandom) is the amount of specialist vocabulary involved. Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking trilogy provides a great basis for concept crossovers in Noise: people broadcast their thoughts constantly for other people to hear! It's quickly explained, easily understood, and a concept crossover that makes use of Noise can be read and enjoyed by someone who's never heard of the Chaos Walking trilogy. With Final Fantasy XIII, though, a person who hasn't played the game will find themselves going 'l'Cie? fal'Cie? Cie'th? Focus? What?'

Basically, what I'm saying is 'I know I write a lot of fanfiction with practically no market, but a crossover between The Mentalist and Final Fantasy XIII would have literally no market, and that's probably why I throw a lot of Final Fantasy XIII crossover ideas around on my journal but never actually write them.'

And also that Seifer, Zell and Rinoa shouldn't raise a child together.
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
'Alas,' I hear you cry, 'I want to hear a kickarse song, but I have only forty-three seconds to spare!'

Well, Phineas and Ferb has come to your rescue with 'Mom Look'. I so want an extended version of this. 'Tree-Related Wish' is also a pretty great under-a-minute song, although that's more because of the lyrics.

Have I ever mentioned that Candace and Jeremy are really, really cute? They are so cute. I would not say no to a Jeremy in my life.

(I've been reading The Ask and the Answer, the second book in the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness, and I keep picturing Lee as Jeremy. It's a little disconcerting.)

Waterloo Road is back and as weirdly compelling as ever! I notice they've brought a new bad boy along, because the Waterloo Road Redemption Treadmill moves ever onwards: there's a bad boy introduced, and gradually he becomes too good to provide real conflict, so they have to bring in a new bad boy to cause disruption. Tariq follows Kyle; Kyle followed Finn; Finn followed Bolton.

(Speaking of Finn: that facial hair, Finn? Really? I mean, it's your face, but... are you sure? Also, Josh's hair is becoming more and more tragic with every term.)

The ending of the episode (7.11) actually made me gasp. I'd spent the entire episode trying to work out what to think of Mr Byrne; slamming a kid up against a wall certainly changes things. Goodness me.

It absolutely breaks my heart that Matt has returned and Sam is gone. I wish he had mentioned her; their storyline together in series four was one of my favourites. Maybe they stayed in touch and that's why it wasn't brought up? I hope they stayed in touch.

Also back: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! The opening of the second series was so cool. I found myself genuinely distressed by the events in the maze. NO, PONIES, YOU CAN GET THROUGH THIS.

(When Applejack saw that supposed vision of the future in the pool? I had tears in my eyes, I have to confess. I am so weirdly invested in the friendship of these cartoon ponies. How is Friendship is Magic so good?)

I love that Fluttershy's nature made her completely impossible for Discord to undermine. You are my favourite, Fluttershy.

Yes, I'll admit that I consume a lot of media intended for children. But it's such a great time for children's media! Phineas and Ferb and Friendship is Magic are both genuinely well-crafted programmes, and I find they're really good things to watch when you're feeling a bit down. (Waterloo Road is not well-crafted, but it's also not aimed at children, so it makes me feel less as if society is glaring at me and demanding that I explain myself.)
rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (...really?)
Yet another ridiculous Kurt/Blaine AU. I can't stop! (It is so good to be writing again.)

Title: Focus
Fandom: Glee
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Kurt/Blaine
Wordcount: 6,000
Summary: AU for 'Never Been Kissed'. The students of Dalton Academy are impressive singers, yes, but Kurt is more interested by the fact that he can hear their thoughts.
Notes: The concept of Noise is borrowed from Patrick Ness's novel The Knife of Never Letting Go, with a couple of alterations. That's the only connection between this fic and that book, though, so there's absolutely no need to have read it in order to understand this; it works as a perfectly normal story about telepathic gay schoolboys.

Focus )
rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: riku, blindfolded and smiling slightly. (we'll be the darkness)
Axel: As long as we remember each other, we'll never be apart. Got it memorised?
Roxas: Ha ha, wow, Axel. That sounded ridiculous.
Axel: What? I thought it was pretty deep.

Roxas: (reading) 'You can't train if you don't chain! Wanna rack up points? Then chain, chain, chain! No chain, no gain!' Okay... I think they want me to chain.

Roxas: I've never had a vacation before.
Axel: Is that right?
Roxas: What's my job during vacation?
Axel: What's your - Roxas, you're really missing the point.

Roxas: Let's see what's behind door number two...
Xaldin: Roxas! We have to keep a low profile, you fool! No more throwing doors open. I won't have it.

Roxas: Nice sofa.
Xaldin: No breaks, Roxas.
Roxas: No, I wasn't - I didn't mean - I was just saying...

Who translated this game? I am really enjoying all the dialogue.

On a less approving note: I have now gone on at least one mission with every regular Organization member (not counting Saïx and Xemnas, who I assume are too busy respectively being leaderish and shouting 'BLARGH HEARTS' at the sky to sneak past animated clocks with me) save Luxord. THIS ISN'T OKAY, DAYS. I DEMAND MORE LUXORD INTERACTION. At the moment he's just sitting in the Grey Area and describing everything in poker metaphors, which is hilarious but not enough.

(OH MY GOODNESS I ONLY JUST REALISED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CALLING THE ROOM IN WHICH THE ORGANIZATION MEMBERS HANG OUT THE 'GREY AREA'

SHUT UP I'M SLOW.)

At the moment, I am reading The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. It's all very suspenseful and intriguing, but my mind is somewhat ruining the effect by picturing (spoiler, highlight to read) the girl as Xion (so far her primary characteristics are being silent, LIKE XION IN HER FIRST DAYS IN THE ORGANIZATION, and seeming emotionless, ALMOST AS IF SHE IS MISSING HER HEART) and Manchee as the dog from Up. And then there's the cassor, which is clearly Kevin. THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO: IT'S BASICALLY UP WITH NOBODIES.
