rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)
[personal profile] rthstewart is currently hosting a three-sentence ficathon, if you'd like to poke through the current prompts or post some of your own! (Exceeding three sentences is absolutely allowed.)

This seems like an appropriate time to do a commentfic round-up, so here are some scraps of fanfiction I've posted here and there.

Zanki Zero, 150 words, prompt: character/everyone )

Silent Hill 2, 100 words, prompt: mistaken identity )

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, 200 words, prompt: Pyrrhic victory )

Night in the Woods, 150 words, prompt: while the town sleeps )

'Riona, did you give yourself that anonymous character/everyone prompt?' you may very well ask, to which my response is 'shhhh'.

[personal profile] pict demanded to know all my ambitious fic ideas, which reminded me of something I've been thinking about doing for a while: archiving the fic ideas I've been scribbling down in my diaries.

Every year, I buy the same style of diary, which has a couple of blank pages at the back. I've been using these blank pages to note down fic concepts since 2013. Some of these get written! Many of them don't.

If I type up the unwritten concepts, maybe one of them will inspire me? (Or indeed inspire someone else? Feel free to let me know if you're interested in writing any of these!) At the very least, they'll no longer be languishing in old diaries I rarely look back at.

These are sorted in alphabetical order by fandom; the notes under any particular fandom may contain spoilers for the canon. Some ideas are extremely vague; some are very specific. Crossovers are filed haphazardly under whichever fandom feels right in the moment. The tags on this entry should give you an idea of which fandoms are represented, if you're wondering whether anything you know is in here!

A huge pile of unwritten fanfiction ideas. )

I'm not sure this exercise has actually sparked any inspiration, but it's good to have all these ideas in one place. If any of these would particularly interest you, let me know!

I invited people on Tumblr to ask me questions about videogames; here are my answers!

As these answers were originally written for an audience that didn't necessarily read my Dreamwidth, I may repeat some sentiments I've already expressed here.

Questions from [archiveofourown.org profile] th_esaurus:

Hardest game you’ve played?

Probably Celeste! It was worth the struggle. I crawled through the main storyline, inch by inch, with ferocious determination, and then I replayed it three times afterwards because I was so delighted to see how much I'd improved.

And lots more rambling about videogames. )

Finally (we're still on [personal profile] keltena's questions):

If you could immerse yourself in any game for one day, which game would it be? What would you do?

A lot of my favourite games would be too dangerous to visit personally, I think! Or I love them on the basis of their characters, and I'd never actually manage to have a conversation with those characters if I spent a day there. Final Fantasy VIII? Good luck talking to Squall Leonhart. Final Fantasy X? Yuna would absolutely talk to me if I approached her, but she's a very private person, so it'd never get beyond surface-level polite conversation about the weather.

Fortunately, I have the perfect answer to this question! I would go to the Pokémon world and admire all the Pokémon and maybe cuddle a Bulbasaur if I'm lucky.

If you have any videogame-related questions of your own, feel free to ask in the comments! It may surprise you to learn this, but I like to talk about videogames.

13 Sentinels fanfiction!

This is more a collection of missing scenes than a single linear fic. Each set of location details marks the start of a new character's perspective.

The connecting theme is 'psychological suffering', because that's what I'm about. The working title was 13 Breakdowns.

I've finished 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim!

Full spoilers for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

My final verdict is that 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is the perfect game if you're me and is probably still a very good game if you're not. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys extremely story-heavy games full of wild twists.

A word of advice to anyone playing this game: it looks like you can save mid-battle, but loading the file will just put you back at the beginning of the battle. Don't be me and discover this in the last quarter of the final battle.

I've only got a few scenes left in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim! It's going to be so strange to finish this game!

I just love all these stupid kids. What great stupid kids.

More 13 Sentinels rambling! The main plot developments I discuss here are from Juro's route (which I've now finished!), Hijiyama's and Gouto's.

Notes on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

I'm going to miss this game when I've finished it.

I continue to have far too much to say about 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. This post mainly deals with Amiguchi's story, with reference to Minami's, but I allude to other characters' storylines in the fic idea I discuss at the end.

Spoilers for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

I keep feeling 13 Sentinels must run out of startling plot developments at some point, and yet somehow it never does.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
The theme of today's 13 Sentinels entry is 'thousands of question marks'. I talk here about Minami, Ei and Miura's storylines, and about Gouto's prologue.

Notes on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

In non-spoilery news, I love Miura's embarrassed little three-quarter back-turned, tipping-hat-over-eyes pose.
rionaleonhart: twewy: joshua kiryu is being fabulously obnoxious and he knows it. (is that so?)
Can't believe I went an entire day without posting about 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. It's getting increasingly difficult to specify where I'm up to, but here's some talk about Miura, Megumi, Hijiyama and Ogata's routes.

Notes on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

It's pretty cool to see the way the developments in these out-of-order scenes slowly start to link up!

More notes on perfect videogame 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim! I'm up to Ogata and Ryoko's first locks, and I'm working through Miura's story.

Notes on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

Every time I go 'ah, I'm probably not going to be that into this character's storyline' I turn out to be wrong. Every time!

Side note (she says, before rambling for three hundred words): it's always interesting to see the Second World War through the eyes of Japanese characters in Japanese media.

As a European, when I think about the war, I think about the Holocaust, and naturally the participating countries fall into fairly black-and-white categories if I think of them as either 'for the Holocaust' or 'against the Holocaust'. But that's not necessarily how the countries involved saw it. After all, do countries really tend to consider themselves responsible for the actions of their allies? How aware would they have been of what was happening?

(I did not realise until just now, looking it up, that the United Kingdom gave permission for the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Shit.)

As a Japanese soldier fighting in the war, Miura isn't thinking about Europe or the Holocaust at all. It's 1945, so in fact the war in Europe may already have ended. He doesn't condone or even contemplate anything that's happening in Europe; it's not relevant to him. All he knows is that he's fighting to protect his home, and, if he doesn't change the course of history, the atomic bomb will be dropped.

Of course, I was already aware that individual Axis soldiers probably weren't aware of what they'd later be seen to have been fighting for, but it's also striking to see a narrative of the war that excludes Europe, when I'm much more used to narratives of the war in Europe that exclude the rest of the world. At school in the UK, I learnt very, very little about the Pacific War; the participation of Japan and the US in the Second World War was barely touched on.

I don't really know what I'm trying to express here. It's just interesting to see the perspective of a character on a different side, in a different part of the world, and discover a completely different narrative of the war from the one I'm used to.

My increasingly incoherent notes on 13 Sentinels continue! I talk here about Ei and Yuki's storylines up to the first lock, and about Miura and Tomi's prologues. (I've also played Ryoko's prologue, although I don't think I go into that here.)

I've warmed slightly to the battle segments, although I'm not sorry that the game spends so much more time on story than on battling.

Notes on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. )

Plot speculation: this game concludes with me making this game and travelling back in time to make sure I play it.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
I've played Juro, Fuyusaka and Megumi's routes up to the first lock in 13 Sentinels!

(I tried to commit to using surnames in my entries for the sake of consistency, but at this point I'm going to admit defeat and just use whatever name I find easier to remember. There are just so many names to learn. Plus it's hard to achieve the dream of consistency when the characters' names are canonically inconsistent.)

I continue to know less about the plot of this game with every new scene, but I'm having such a good time I don't care.

More 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim! I've just reached the point where things open up, and I'm working my way through Kurabe's story.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, spoilers for Sekigahara’s prologue and assorted early Kurabe branches. )

I think the point I realised I was definitely going to love this game was Hijiyama's prologue. There was Kurabe, who I liked immediately, and then there was Fuyusaka, and I went, 'Oh, cool, I know her from Kurabe's prologue (and potentially ship them slightly); it'll be good to get to know her better.' Then there was Hijiyama, and I went, 'Who the hell is this guy? I'm just going to want to get back to the characters I already know and like.' And then his incredible dynamic with Okino came to light, and I realised that actually I was going to be interested in everyone.
rionaleonhart: okami: amaterasu is startled. (NOT SO FAST)
With the slight easing of restrictions, my family were able to have a socially distanced Easter meal in the sunshine, which was lovely!

This was the first time we'd been able to gather since the last-minute cancellation of Christmas, so we were finally able to exchange presents, and my brother gave me 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim may have hit a new record for time from 'I'm hitting "New Game"' to 'I have no idea what's going on'.

Notes on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, up to the end of Megumi Yakushiji's prologue. )

I didn't know anything about this game when I started, and now I'm three hours in and I still don't.
